Ex-Drum Major Gets Probation In FAMU Hazing Case

By Amy Pavuk, Orlando Sentinel

ORLANDO, Fla. — A former drum major charged in the fatal Florida A&M University hazing case was sentenced to five years probation Friday, Orange County court records show.

Court records show Jarrod Deas pleaded no-contest a felony hazing charge Friday. In addition to probation, Deas was ordered to serve 100 hours community service.

Robert Champion, 26, was punched, kicked and bludgeoned to death in November 2011 after the Florida Classic football game in Orlando.

Champion, a drum major, got onboard a bus knowing he was facing his school band’s long-standing hazing ritual.

More than a dozen band members were arrested as a result of the investigation into Champion’s death, including Deas, of South Carolina.
