LOS ANGELES — Police on horseback, backed by officers clad in riot gear, arrested at least four people after crowds of fans spilled onto the streets Monday evening in Huntington Park to celebrate Mexico’s World Cup victory.

The fans, many of them waving Mexican flags, were moving on sidewalks and on Pacific Boulevard in the city’s downtown area, where some of the fans surrounded a vehicle and began rocking it, according to television news footage. Huntington Park is south of downtown Los Angeles.

One woman was arrested on suspicion of throwing a bottle at officers on horseback. Two other people were arrested on suspicion of public intoxication, and another for failing to disperse, according to police.

One woman received minor injuries in an incident involving an officer’s horse, police said.

Television news footage showed a man being wrestled to the ground and handcuffed by three Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies.

The agency had dispatched personnel to assist Huntington Park police. Some officers cruised the area in dark armored vehicles.

Another women could be seen running from officers, who took her to the ground, according to TV news footage.

Earlier Monday, Mexico defeated Croatia in World Cup group play in Brazil. The 3-1 win ensured that Mexico moved on to the round of 16 in the international soccer tournament.
