It’s More Than Bin Laden

WASHINGTON — We expect some hypocrisy in politics, but it was still jaw-dropping to behold Republicans accusing President Obama of politicizing the anniversary of the killing of Osama bin Laden. Wasn’t it just eight years ago that the GOP organized an entire presidential campaign — including the choreography of its 2004 national convention — around the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and George W. Bush’s response to them?

Obama’s opponents don’t just think we have short attention spans. They imagine we have no memories whatsoever.

Yet very quickly, Mitt Romney and the rest of his party began slinking away from their offensive. It’s true, of course, that Obama played the ultimate presidential trump card. He visited our troops in Afghanistan on Tuesday, the anniversary of the bin Laden raid, and, with military vehicles serving as a rough-hewn backdrop, addressed the nation from the scene of our longest war.

But the GOP retreat reflected something else as well. For the first time since the early 1960s, the Republican Party enters a presidential campaign at a decided disadvantage on foreign policy. Republicans find it hard to get accustomed to the fact that when they pull their favorite political levers — accusations that Democrats are “weak” or Romney’s persistent and false claims that Obama “apologizes” for America — nothing happens.

The polls could hardly be clearer. In early April, a Washington Post/ABC News Poll found that 53 percent of Americans trusted Obama over Romney to handle international affairs. Only 36 percent trusted Romney more. On a list of 12 matters that a president would deal with, Obama enjoyed a larger advantage only on one other question, the handling of women’s issues. And on coping with terrorism, the topic on which Republicans once enjoyed a near-monopoly, Obama led Romney by seven points.

How did this happen? The primary reason, to borrow a term from science, is negative signaling: By the end of Bush’s second term, the Republicans’ approach to foreign policy was discredited in the eyes of a majority of Americans. The war in Iraq turned out (and this is being quite charitable) much differently than the Bush administration had predicted.

It is always worth recalling Vice President Dick Cheney’s interview with Tim Russert on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on March 16, 2003. Among other things, Cheney famously declared that “I really do believe that we will be greeted as liberators.” And when Russert asked whether “we would have to have several hundred thousand troops there” in Iraq “for several years in order to maintain stability,” Cheney replied, “I disagree,” insisting: “That’s an overstatement.”

It was not an overstatement.

These owners will substantialy support maintaining an outsized defense industry to allow them time to re-tool their factories to supply other goods. They will try to get government funding for same by aiming at Alternative Energy projects, that they can get the taxpayer to partialy underwrite.

You can be certain that Republican Senators and Representatives will be lobbying forcfully for their campaign finace owners, oops excuse me donors.

Could you give us some facts as to how you determine that Obama’s policy on Israel, Afghanistan, Iran et al. have been a “dismal failure”? Maybe also you could describe for us the Republican policies on Israel, Afghanistan, and Iran. What about Libya? How much did it cost us taxpayers for Libya compared to the two Republican wars, Afghanistan and Iraq? Other questions include how much did we save this year by getting out of Iraq? Seems the Democrats always have to get us out of the Republicans wars! In four years Obama will have our military troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan! Seems like great foreign policy to me! Presidency a dismal failure??? Let’s see: In addition to getting us out of Iraq and killing Bin Laden, he worked with Nato to get rid of Ghadaffy, he gave enough support to the Arab uprisings to get regime changes in several countries, he’s gotten the Afgan situation such that it’s not in the news every day like it was during Bush’s presidency, he’s gotten the world to support sanctions on Iran and North Korea, instead of getting us into another questionable war, and on the home front: the stock market has more than doubled, he followed through on the auto bailout which save at least 1.5 million jobs and together with TARP and other initiatives, helped create more than 3 million jobs over the past 3 years which more than likely prevented the GOP from creating their second Big Depression…it was 12 years of GOP mismanagement that ultimately ended in the Big Depression of the 1930s. Some failure!! Let me see you list even two accomplishments of the Bush Administration, other than: Letting 9/11 happen during your watch, Starting an unnecessary war in Iraq that ended up killing at least 5,000 Americans and more than 100,000 Iraqis, Passing two misguided tax cuts that resulted in adding at least 8 trillion to the country’s deficits (Bush is responsible for the majority of the increase in the deficit under Obama…he doesn’t get clear of the disaster he created just because he walked out the door in early 2009), and I could go on and on with disasters, including the 2008 burst of the Home Market and Finacial Sector bankruptcies that created the worst recession since Coolidge (another GOP president) did something similar in 1928.

President Obama deserves praise for carrying forth the Bush/Cheney foreign policy with the killing of Ben Laden. It is regretful that he has otherwise departed from it with predictable results in discouraging our allies and strengthening those who wish us harm.

The difference is clear; timely and effective decision-making. When a guy is consistently late in making his tax returns; regrets over his stand that Detroit should be left to go bankrupt; is still considering the impact of disclosing his offshore accounts to the people he wants to govern; is still unable to figure out the enormous savings in dollars and lives by flushing Gaddafi out without American troops in Libya; and undecided over the significance of the death of bin Laden on the psyche of the American people especially in the light of 9/11, then that guy is to say the least, a fall guy PERIOD.

Romney started out by saying he would double down in Afganistan and add more troops to win it, but saw that the mood of America has shifted and people are tired of war. What Romney is not saying and Republicans have practiced for the last 8 yrs in power is funneling more and more money to the defense companies like Grumman, Lockeed-Martin and Raytheon. This is where the real money is spent, on profits for these companies. War is good for business and good for Wall st, and this is the main reason that Republicans yell for national security. Clinton’s weak response to the Cole was why terrorists numbers grew so fast. But Bin Laden worked for the CIA around that time? Maybe he was just a wolf in sheep’s clothing, rather than be found out, he simply jumped ship. He was brilliant as a terrorist, we must admit that. Why don’t we have people with those kahoonies who spread freedom? Our current policy of dropping bombs on areas where terrorists may be doesn’t seem to be making many friends.

I find it interesting how the GOP wants to play this game. The truest part of this article is that they think we have no memory at all,President Bush loved using troops as backdrops for photo ops. Anyone remember him keeping a nuclear carrier out at sea just so he could “fly in” and stand under a sign reading “mission accomplished”? But according to the GOP that was neither wasting money, time or politicizing the war on terror.

McCain did not even think him fit to be vice president, now the Arizona senator has destroyed any integrity he had left by coming out to endorse a man he clearly could not stand just four years ago. Romney has no foreign policy gravitas, other than his ability to speak French. And, he cannot deliver on the economy as though he were CEO of Bain Capital. Look up the defintion of FRAUD in any American English language dictionary and you will find a full color photo of Mitt Romney.

I heartily agree with you Zebo1 – Romney doesn’t seem to stand for anything. With all of his flip-flopping (which was a really bad thing if you were John Kerry) the only thing he stands for is whatever it takes to get more votes. It seems like he’s running to get the title, as opposed to running to make a positive change (which gets re-defined every day). The fact that his campaign readily admitted to an “etch-a-sketch” campaign strategy should disgust everyone – but the GOP just eats it up. I don’t get it…

Mr. Obama’s role as commander-in-chief makes him responsible for troop morale, and no one can dispute the importance of that element in this discussion. What would the effect have been if he had signed the agreement with Karzai, dusted his hands off and simply walked away from it all? Or, if we must be petty, landed on an aircraft carrier and pounded his chest?

The time he devoted to our war fighters was nothing less than one of the classiest and most memorable things we have ever seen one of our presidents do. And the troops very obviously appreciated it.

I don’t believe that the Pubs are evil and trying to destroy this country, after all they will go down with us and soon their wealth will dwindle meaning no more easy money.. In short, they do not intend to cut off their food (money) supply.. What they are attempting is to have it ALL their way and this is just as wrong, just as evil. Pubs are people too but their primarily people with little or no sympathy toward those who are less off than they are.. They give the most to charities ONLY if they can use it as a tax shelter.. Not one of them (that I know of) gives anonymously. So now we have no foreign policy debate and the Repubs know it. What do they have left? Attack the president because of domestic/economic policy?
