Brian Williams’ Lies Are Not Equal To Those Of Fox ‘News’

Share
Photo: Top US television anchor Brian Williams says he is taking himself off the air for "several days" as he faces an internal investigation for embellishing an Iraq war story (AFP/Robyn Beck)

There’s this speech I give my students. Distilled, it goes like this.

“Your primary asset as a journalist is not your dogged curiosity, your talent for research or your ability to make prose sing on deadline. No, your one indispensable asset is your credibility. If you are not believable, nothing else matters.”

Which brings us, inevitably, to Brian Williams. The NBC Nightly News anchor saw his career crumple like used Kleenex last week after he repeated one time too many a story he has been telling for years: how a U.S. military helicopter on which he was a passenger was shot down over Iraq in 2003.

But the man who was flight engineer on that copter said on Facebook that Williams was never on it. Instead, he was on the one trailing it. Williams apologized for conflating the two, blaming the “fog” of memory.

The incident was remarkably similar to candidate Hillary Clinton’s false 2008 claim that she came under sniper fire as First Lady during a 1996 visit to Bosnia. As it turns out, an American dignitary was shot at in Bosnia — just not Clinton. Rather, it was then-Sen. Olympia Snowe, six months before.

Then, as now, one is tempted to ascribe the lapse to false memory, that phenomenon where you recall with clarity things that never happened. Then, as now, one is hampered by the sheer drama of the events in question. A person may honestly misremember eating at a certain restaurant or seeing a given movie. But you’d think you’d be pretty clear on whether or not somebody almost killed you.

So now, people are poring over old newscasts to determine whether this is an isolated incident. A statement by Williams of seeing bodies outside his hotel during Hurricane Katrina was initially mocked, but has been found on closer inspection to be more credible than first believed.

Fans of Fox “News,” at least to judge from my email queue, are having a ball with all this. I wrote a column a few weeks back blasting Fox for its habitual, ideology-driven inaccuracy. Attacking Fox is not for the faint of heart. Its viewers (like Rush Limbaugh’s listeners) tend to take it personally, responding with such a nasty, visceral outrage that a body might think you’d blasphemed their deity rather than criticized their news outlet. I savaged CNN in this space last year and while some folks took issue, no one called me a “bleephole” or invited me to “bleep” myself. With Fox fans, that’s the salutation.

So this latest news brings a flood of email crowing over Williams’ troubles and demanding I give him equal treatment.

As I wrote in the aforementioned column, serious people do not take Fox seriously. Indeed, consider the level of angst, the sense of expectations betrayed, that has attended Williams’ failure and ask yourself: Would there be a similar outpouring if someone at Fox had told this whopper?

Unlikely.

Fox is what Fox is, but its distortions and mendacities are generally only mistaken for gospel by a stratum of the electorate already predisposed to its bizarre worldview. The rest of us like to think we can expect a higher standard from the old guard of the news media, meaning the likes of CBS, NBC and The New York Times. And usually we can.

But every time that belief is betrayed — meaning not garden variety errors of fact, but catastrophic failures of journalistic integrity — the damage is exponentially greater precisely because the level of trust is exponentially higher. Such failures feed the disaffection and cynicism of a politically polarized nation where the universally accepted fact is an endangered species.

It’s a state of affairs that makes it hard to run a country. Or to be one.

So people asking that I give Brian Williams equal treatment are missing the point. If, indeed, he lied, then his sins are not equal to Fox’s.

They are worse.

Brian Williams should not have embellished his personal record the way he did, but his decision to do so did not hurt anyone but himself, and I doubt anyone was persuaded to do anything extreme based on what he said.
A six month suspension for trying to turn himself into a hero of sorts, while people like Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, Coulter and others lie continuously, distort facts to influence the decisions of millions of Americans, and damage the reputation of their targets, continue to carry out their agenda with absolute impunity, and make tons of money while they do it, highlight the hypocrisy of what passes for journalism in the United States.

Your argument sounds very hollow. Where were the authors examples of lies and embellishment by Fox anchors.
Hannity is the only anchor for Fox. Name one proven lie that Hannity, O’Reilly, Meagan, Greta, Bret have expressed. Name one embellishment of their experiences.
Williams was the anchor for a left leaning news organization and dishonored himself and all wonderful men and women who have served in combat. An insult to Bob Woodruff who paid dearly for his reporting of the war. He is gone!! The other shoe will drop as more embellishments are found.
Would love to hear what you think are distortions in your mind.

Not so hollow. What can people think when they hear or read comments such as Q. Coppermann’s letter to the editor about the Chicago gangster (a.k.a. Barack Hussein Obama)…

You don’t know this Brian debacle has opened eyes of everyone of us who can think. From now onwards, we are going to hold Fox News liers their feet on fire. Once they lie as they have used to do, they will be put on the limelight. Don’t be surprised a lot will leave their jobs at Fox because they are used to lie and can’t lie anymore. They are now on NOTICE. We will go after them until they report the right, truthful news without lying.

I mentioned demagogues – who sometimes call themselves entertainers – that routinely distort the record of President Obama, distort his statements, omit things that are not convenient for the advancement of their agenda, exaggerate, and use rhetoric designed to inflame passions and brain wash the weak.
The fact that some of them work for FOX does not mean the comments they have made in the past were made during FOX broadcasts.
Stop putting words in my mouth, and if you believe your heroes have never done any of the things I said, say so. As for FOX, I have no idea what goes on in that medium, and I am not interested in finding out.

“Beck falsely claimed that he held Washington’s inaugural address in his hands during his Washington Mall speech in 2010 after first claiming “Our sacred honor. It means that you tell the truth. The whole truth and nothing but the truth.” The progressive Mother Jones Magazine caught this “whopper.”
Beck lied when he claimed that he “wrote” his slogan for the Blaze, his online “newspaper.” Ironically, the slogan is “The truth has no agenda.” The conservative Daily Caller caught this lie.
Beck lied about how an interaction with Barbara Walter and Whoopie Goldberg on an Amtrak train took place. Reported to this Review by a former “addict” of Mr. Beck.
Beck lied last year when he claimed that he never edited video of President Obama. Three different bloggers, including this Review, caught that deceitful edit which took Obama’s words completely out of context.
For years Beck lied about his mother’s death and a nonexistent suicide note. This lie was uncovered by a private investigator looking into Beck’s past.
Beck lied about George Soros having helped the Nazis confiscate land. This lie was exposed by The Young Turks’ Cenk Urgur.
During an online rant against Media Matters, Beck lied about the number of viewers he had that week. This lie was uncovered by this Review.
Beck lied when he declared that the operation that killed bin Laden “contradicted every bit of foreign policy, everything [Obama has] ever advocated.” Beck had to have not watched the presidential debates of 2008 to make that false claim”.
I doubt Beck will be suspended. I would not be surprised if he is promoted.

FOX News fans should stop their gloating. Limbaugh and Palin and Hannity attack people and their reputations–and are frequently wrong. They stick together like a flock of magpies–each piling their criticism onto the person so they can build the story up as each repeats their criticism. Example: Sandra Fluke, the college student who wanted her medical insurance to cover birth control pills. Limbaugh called her a slut or prostitute, someone who had sex so often that she needed protection from having multiple sex partners who didn’t have condoms or might have STD’s. He thought she was whining like a baby because she testified before Congress. Obviously, he couldn’t identify with someone who doesn’t have much money and it raises the question if his own insurance covered his love for certain pain pills. The other FOX reporters joined in his defamation of Fluke’s character. Is that any better than Brian Williams embellishing a story?

She majored In “Feminism, gender and human sexuality” at Cornell. Why would you waste your tuition on such a lame major, almost as weak as journalism.
Sandra had been frustrated by sexuality that much as to major in it. Where is the fun of just doin it . She must have a book of instructions in bed so that she does not miss a hair . With a major like that she could even get into Georgetown….hmmm?? Is that not where wild Bill Clinton attended also . I may apply to Georgetown !

It is very noticeable how stories are slanted…. Journalism schools specialize on how to write like this…. Rather then good investigative reporting. It is no wonder that their nightly news ratings are zero. No one rushes home to see the “nightly news” anymore , since many are now working 2 – 30 hour jobs to make a living, is that slanted???

The problem with liars, no matter who they are, is that they can never again be trusted. Unfortunately, the more public the persona liar, the less trust and credibility can be accorded.

Being responsible for one’s statements is essential to the reliability of their facts. Facts and truth NEVER change. They are what they are. Lies and liars always change because they evolve into embellishments born of ego.

While Brian Williams may be responsible for “agreeing” to “punch up” his stories to make them marketable, he isn’t responsible for the edicts of his back room editors-in-chiefs who format the platform upon which he is supposed to present “news.”

This is just the tip of the iceberg for media moguls like Rupert Murdoch who rule with iron fists over their journalists. That iceberg is melting and is about to float out to sea. So much for how brilliant a billionaire media mogul is.

CBS has done what is appropriate with him, a 6 month suspension without pay, and who knows if he will come back.
It seems as though one of Fox News more “respected” commentators has a very similar problem with his claims of being involved in fire fights and other near death experiences. It will be interesting to see how Fox deals with that, once the story fully breaks.

But then, considering that Fox News has a ranking by one fact checking organization of 66% false or “pants on fire” outright lie whenever it comes to Fox’s political reporting, will they even care? Obviously, its faithful watchers do not.

NBC, like all other Nationally known talk shows that pose as News Broadcasts did this to Cover their butts. He should have been given time off with pay to treat an illness not of his willful making. We no longer have News broadcasts. Instead we have a group of Bimbo’s of both sexes conducting a “talk-gossip session among themselves -not giving the NEWS but giving their interpretation of the NEWS. Don’t waste your time sitting in front of your TV Get on the internet. Pick up news from the far east, Latin America, Middle East, Europe and pick up major news here in the States and Canada. Read it – digest it- and use your own cognitive reasoning. Don’t let the highly overpaid talking head bimbos tell you what to think and believe. They are not there to give the News. They are there because they are good “talking heads” and can attract viewers and most importantly – can attract advertisers.

Fox News are not only worse, they are also horrible. Lies after lies to those who can’t challenge them and depend on whatever they say. Us who challenge them (because we are not stupid), are attacked every now and then by the so-called “Fair and Balanced” News Network. Can they prove to us where is the fairness, neither something which is balanced?
Back to Brian Williams and Hillary. These two were right there on the scene. They saw what happened. They were very, very lucky that they didn’t swallow the bullet. God forbid if something bad could had happened to them, we couldn’t hear now what they are accusing them for, that they lied. I have consulted the Dictionary. Lies means one say what never happened at all. But what they said these two did happen and they were there, there on the spot.

I don’t know exactly when people reporting the news suddenly became the news but it’s now common place and it should stop. The job is reporter. When they started giving their opinions, it diluted the facts and truth. When they become part of the story it becomes entertainment. Why in the world when it’s a war zone are civilians even allowed on ride alongs. Why in the middle of a hurricane when everyone else has evacuated is a reporter reporting on how high the winds are, only to be blown off their feet or hit by a rogue wave. I don’t think it’s good reporting or that is a better news station for putting employees in harms way. On the contrary, I think all are more than a little irresponsible and grand standing. I just want the news not a side show. Ultimately the story then becomes about them. I think the reporters then feel pressure to make it an exciting story. I’m sure in a war zone, the fear factor must be quite high and suddenly in the middle of it, the reporter, a scared person not an objective reporter at that point, wants to identify with those assigned to keeping him alive. I don’t think Brian Williams set out to lie. I think once he did, it took on a life of it’s own and maybe in his mind ,it became the truth. He was in a situation, a war zone and perhaps really frightened. Since he repeated it more than once, if he knew it was a lie he also had to know someone could call him out on it.
There’s no comparison to Fox. They lie and embellish with an agenda. Their job is to feed the fears and feelings of their often clueless following. Facts are optional, providing they don’t interfere with the message they are delivering.
They aren’t journalists. Williams is being held to a higher standard because no real news company wants to be thought of as on par with Fox. No journalistic integrity there.
In the same way we expect certain behaviors from rock stars who are for the most part unapologetic because they aren’t promoting themselves as choir boys, it’s shocking when we hear about the same behaviors in someone who has held themselves out to be squeaky clean. If your brand is squeaky clean and employers and sponsors have that expectation then you violated the terms of your contract if you got dirty. It’s that simple. It’s not even a question of fairness. They are in the business where public perception determines the bottom line.

Unless you have been in either of these positions you have no way of knowing trauma.
My group works with Veterans with our main focus on PTSD veterans. We encounter a lot from the Iraq/Afghanistan wars and we have several from the war in Vietnam with some from the “Police Action” in Korea. These Veterans can tell us about the battle they were in that caused their trauma and they suffer. However, a check of what Unit they were in and where the battle took place shows the impossibility of they ever being in this battle. They may have been 25 Km away but they weren’t in the battle. It happens in every war. One may be well read and “book-wise” but one does not possess exact knowledge unless one has been in that position and experienced it first hand.

The problem with re-telling a story is a person never tells it exactly the same every time. Over time, embellishment easily happens, sometimes intentionally, sometimes by accident. Our minds fall easily into self-glorification instead of self-effacement. It’s why soldiers nowhere near the front later tell war stories like they were on the frontline of danger. It’s time to move on. Mr. Williams has been knocked down a step or two, which everyone needs from time to time to return to reality. That said, he’s a great news anchor.

They better do so. FoxNews people know
if they chastise Williams, we will dig into their backgrounds and find why they
are working there. Most anchors at FoxNews are thieves, liars, women hunters, divorcees,
racists, bigots and above all violent. Just a few weeks ago Sarah Palin family
was involved in a brawl at a bar. You also know Bill apologized several three
years ago for harassing his office women. He paid $2 mi to silence the women. But
also we should remember pollsters such as Gallop and Rasmusen lie all the time
and in favor of Republican candidates. You remember in 2012 they told us Romney
was head of Obama by 5 points. Their lie caused Karl Rove to rent a big luxury
boat for 7 days to celebrate Romney’s win over Obama. Rove paid $1.2 mi for services
on the boat such remodeled rooms for him and other Repub friends; booze; food
and above all women models to entertain GOP males. Rover wasted GOP fundraiser
money because of deliberate pollsters’ lies.
I am not condoning Williams’ lies. But we should use some restraint not
to penalize him as done in the world.
William should be given another role somewhere else in NBC.

Fox is routinely called on their lies. Politifact finds the news division of this monstrosity to be mostly false, false, or “pants on fire” false 60% of the time. In other words, they lie more often than they include any truth in their news. Other studies show the same thing.

However, the fox fanatics attack anything that points out the mendacity of their cherished media outlet as liberal biased propaganda. Nothing gets into that bubble.

As the piece points out here, rational people don’t trust Fox and they have no credibility to lose. More grounded media however, must live and perform to a higher standard of credibility (or just SOME standard of credibility)

Actually, although they naturally spin the interpretation of the news, MSNBC does not make up false stories. For example, there really WAS a planned lane shutdown that blocked the on-ramp to the bridge to New York, it really DID have no valid purpose in “traffic surveying,” there really ARE emails tying people at the top of the NYNJPA to it, and suggesting that Governor Christie, or perhaps some overzealous aide, may have triggered it; it’s just that CNN does not emphasize anything about the story except that it happened, and it never happened at all on Fox.

Fox makes up completely false stories, such as the “birther” nonsense, or the Benghazi “scandal” or the IRS “scandal,” or else has someone lower in the esteem of the public break those “stories” (such as the phony ACORN sting), then Fox can just say “some people say …” and not be charged with lying if they just imply that what “some people” say is true. Then when the stories have been debunked “seventy times seven times” in the REAL news media, Fox people still repeat them as if they had been verified as true, while these stories are just as true as Rupert Murdoch’s rumored Ferengi ancestry and O’Really’s rumored Klingon grandfather.

at George Mason University has a new study noticing that the “fact-checking” site Politifact.com over the first four months of Obama’s second term found Republicans were cited as dishonest three
            times as often as Democrats.

Even in the first three weeks in May, while the Obama scandals piled up– from Benghazi to the IRS to the DOJ phone-records scandals —
Republicans are still being flagged as worse than Democrats, with 60 percent of the website’s selective claims rated as false so far this
month (May 1 – May 22), compared to 29 percent of their Democratic statements – a 2 to 1 margin.

No one should assume that a fact-checking organization can only be assumed to be fair if it tries to employ a 50-50 partisan quota on who’s mangling the facts. However, “independent” fact-checking groups run by “mainstream” media companies can easily be questioned about a liberal tilt.

It’s this easy: when the “Pants on Fire” page presently displays 18 lies by Republicans or conservatives, and two by liberals or Democrats, perhaps there’s some bias leaking in.

The pants-checkers at Politifact can even select vague philosophical statements as lies, such as Mitt Romney asserting redistribution” has “never been a characteristic of America.” Apparently, subsidies for transcontinental railroads were “redistribution” in the 1800s.

Next time perhaps find a site that is less bias. I know it’s hard to do but it is possible. I am always overjoyed when I find something on a Liberal site, like ABC, that actually states the truth:) In reality we are all fed so much bullsh*% that it is hard to know what is right or wrong.

Could it be because they have no integrity or couth, and they will do just about anything for ratings. Well, I think they better rethink the wheel because, as far as we see it, it ‘ain’t’ working.

Why don’t you just give us some examples on how Fox is acting like Brian Williams and Melissa-Harris-Perry (what a lunatic)

What happened to Brian Williams is really rather common though most are never called into account as was Brian. It happens to non-combatants and to combatants alike. A Traumatic experience after the fact tends to become more real until, like Brian, one ceases being an observer and becomes an integral part of the action. It is a Psychological action caused by trauma.
If a thorough investigation was made on all embedded Reporters in a War Zone as to the veracity of some of their experiences after the fact one would find several Brian Williams. Brian needs a break from Broadcasting to handle the this psychological experience.

As for all the armchair quarterbacks out there – You should give thanks to God you were spared from being an embedded reporter in a Combat Group and be more so thankful you were not a Combat Veteran. Both are HELL.

Absolutely. As a Conservative, I came largely to this site specifically to observe, and also to compare and contrast ideology. I wanted to reason with the idea of understanding the Left and figure out where we as a nation have gone so wrong. Why are we so divided? Articles certainly flare intentional bias, and that is why we have divided media on both sides. As a result. outlets certainly can indoctrinate the masses. Yet initially, we make up our own minds about which way we believe because of the circumstances experienced throughout our lives.

I also believe an exceptional leader brings humanity together. Unfortunately, since his inauguration, with Obama in office, such is not the case . I not only blame him because I voted for him in 2008 (I too wanted to see change after Bush). Which side started this is really of no relevance because in a nutshell, I believe both sides are to blame and the same. By that I mean greedy. Yet I still put the overall blame on Obama because a great leader would never have let this happen. In fact, he only encourages this type of tirade and thus, we have division.

United means united. Divided means divided. If we continue to move at odds with each other than this Country will be no more. I’m wondering if that is what you folks want? There has to be a give and take on both sides and that is just not occurring at the moment. In business, diplomacy and compromise are the answer when there is a conflict of interest. The Constitution doesn’t seem to have a built in ‘hold your horses’ clause. If the shoe were on the other foot you all would be outraged. Forcing Americans is just not the American way.

I think one thing we can agree on is that something has gone terribly wrong in this country. When you have elitists (and I mean on both sides) making their own decisions and there are no longer checks and balances then you no longer have a democracy and ‘for the people’ by the people’ has just gone out the window along with justice for all….. So you see, it is a lose lose situation, Eleanore and yes, Godzilla, her tirades are making your side look bad.

I do not see why this is the big deal that it is. Brian Williams either has recall problems, or he lied on several occasions. They laid him off. So, they came down on him, fast and hard, making no excuses. This is so much more than Fox has ever done, even when Politifact calls out their numerous lies all the time. Fox, in fact, went to court to defend themselves against accusations of lying, and what was their defense? They maintain that they are not a news, but an entertainment outlet, and therefore, they do not have to tell the unvarnished truth. And yet, their fans love and defend Fox. And they continue to believe the “entertainment” as being factual.
