Spinning Trump's Oil Crisis, Energy Secretary Flails And Apologizes

Energy Secretary Chris Wright attempted to do some damage control Thursday, as oil prices continue their rollercoaster climb. But unfortunately for Wright, it’s hard to sell a flaming bag of manure.

“Ultimately, this is going to help us fill the reserve, but we need the oil in the short term for the—short term pain for long term gain,” he told CNBC, defending the release of 172 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

Wright’s own department says it doesn’t expect gas prices to return to pre-war levels until well into 2027.

Also in the interview, Wright claimed that President Donald Trump’s war on Iran makes energy markets safer—which was quickly undercut by footage aired alongside him, showing Iran's strikes on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.

Wright then appeared on CNN, where he worked his ass off trying to spin what is clearly an oil crisis of Trump’s own making.

“We're in the midst of a significant disruption in the short term to fix the security of energy flow for the long term,” he said, downplaying an International Energy Agency report released Thursday, which found that Trump’s Iran war “is creating the largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market.”

And then when Wright appeared on the usually friendly shores of Fox News, he was forced to apologize for posting—and then deleting—a claim that the Trump administration had successfully escorted an oil tanker through the Strait of Hormuz, throwing the markets into chaos.

“I take full ownership of that as the person in charge of the department,” Wright said. “Very unfortunate. It will not happen again.”

Wright also acknowledged Thursday that the U.S. Navy currently has no way to escort tankers safely through the waterway.

“It can’t happen now,” he said. “We’re simply not ready.”

'Robotic' Melania Hustles Artificial Intelligence Like It's Her New Job

'Robotic' Melania Hustles Artificial Intelligence Like It's Her New Job

Melania Trump broke her self-imposed White House exile to continue pushing her AI fever dream on behalf of her husband’s administration.

While attending a White House Task Force on Artificial Intelligence meeting Thursday alongside Cabinet members like Education Secretary Linda McMahon—the one who spearheads federal school policy and referred to AI as “A1,” like the steak sauce—the first lady talked up the future of the new technology in an eerie speech.

“Cars now steer themselves through our cities, robots hold steady hands in the operating room, and drones are redefining the future of war,” Trump said. “Inventions of first-generation humanoids, factory automation, and autonomous vehicles have surged from private sector investment. Every one of these advancements is powered by AI.”

“The robots are here—our future is no longer science fiction,” she intoned robotically.

And while the first lady seems to be the chief public cheerleader for the Trump administration’s AI initiative, the former model doesn’t quite have the technological background suited for the gig.

But if you ask Energy Secretary Chris Wright, he would say otherwise. In a separate appearance Thursday, Wright told Fox News that Melania is “wiser than all of us” as the Trump team works to push AI forward.

“God bless the first lady,” he exclaimed. Wright, of course, has teamed up with EPA administrator Lee Zeldin and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to ramp up the production of coal, oil, and uranium in order to feed the bottomless energy pit that is the AI industry’s stomach. As for Melania, her role has seemingly been to promote AI among youth and educators. As Daily Kos previously reported, she announced her “AI challenge” on August 26 for grade school children and educators in an attempt to promote the creation of AI products.

“As someone who created an AI-powered audiobook and championed online safety through the TAKE IT DOWN Act, I’ve seen firsthand the promise of this powerful technology. Now I pass the torch of innovation to you,” Melania said in a social media announcement.

But looming over all the glitz and hype of the Trump administration’s AI enabling are myriad lawsuits and fears of “AI psychosis.”

OpenAI is facing litigation after its generative software reportedly led to a young adult’s suicide, but the White House’s messaging around the technology remains clear: The U.S. needs to become the AI capital of the world—no matter the social, fiscal, or environmental cost.

Scientists Issue Scathing Rebuke Of EPA's 'False Narrative' On Climate Change

Scientists Issue Scathing Rebuke Of EPA's 'False Narrative' On Climate Change

Nearly a hundred climate scientists penned a letter to the Department of Energy urging officials to reconsider an alarming new report that veers away from climate change findings. In a comprehensive review released on Tuesday, 85 scientists collectively said that Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin seem to be leaning on confirmation bias to justify their ongoing efforts to dismantle the EPA.

The EPA report, scientists said, “undermines” previous scientific studies on climate change and creates a “false narrative” that “downplays the scale of recent atmospheric changes and the degree to which those changes are attributable to human activities. The report unjustifiably downplays human impact on warming,” the reviewt added.

Speaking to Inside Climate News, Texas A&M Professor Andrew Dessler said that Zeldin and Wright’s report “makes a mockery of science.”

“It relies on ideas that were rejected long ago, supported by misrepresentations of the body of scientific knowledge, omissions of important facts, arm waving, anecdotes, and confirmation bias,” he added.

Of course, a report claiming that climate change and greenhouse gases are actually not a big deal would fit in really well with Zeldin and Wright’s agenda. In recent months, Zeldin has not only slashed the EPA workforce into a fraction of what it used to be, but he also wants the employees left to stop enforcing pollution limits on power plants and, even, to stop collecting data on greenhouse gases altogether. Zeldin also announced that the EPA would no longer consider greenhouse gases a danger to public health.

“The proposal would, if finalized, amount to the largest deregulatory action in the history of the United States,” he said during a press conference, adding that the change would get rid of emission limits on vehicles.

Then again, as Interior Secretary Doug Burgum pushes ahead by expanding coal mines and allowing more oil leases, removing the science that would raise alarms would make sense. While the administration works to dismantle years of effort to reel in pollution that—according to scientific findings—is negatively impacting the environment, they’re also working overtime to stifle science.
