George Conway Says White House Legal ’Trash’ Guarantees Impeachment

Although George Conway has been consistently outspoken against President Donald Trump on Twitter, the conservative attorney seldom gives interviews. But he made an exception this week when he spoke to former federal prosecutor and CNN legal analyst Preet Bharara for his podcast “Stay Tuned With Preet.” And during the interview, Conway took aim at a letter that, on Tuesday, White House Pat Cipollone sent to prominent House Democrats decrying their impeach inquiry against Trump.

The arguments Cipollone used on Trump’s behalf in that letter, Conway told Bharara, were “garbage” — and he explained why.

The attorney asserted, “It’s just garbage…. This was trash. I mean, the thrust of (Cipollone’s letter) is that there are some kind of constitutional obligations that the House has failed to meet that therefore, render its impeachment inquiry illegitimate and unconstitutional — which is complete nonsense because all the Constitution says is that the House has the sole power over impeachment.”

The Trump White House has angrily refused to cooperate in the impeachment inquiry — a move Conway described to Bharara as “a disgrace to the country, a disgrace to the presidency and a disgrace to the legal profession.” And Cipollone’s letter, he said, “virtually guarantees” Trump’s impeachment in the House.

Conway — who is married to senior Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway — also lambasted Cipollone’s letter on Twitter, posting, “It’s hard to count the number of ways that this letter is, constitutionally and legally, garbage…. This letter, in and of itself, is an impeachable offense.”

Cipollone’s anti-impeachment letter was sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as well as three House committee chairmen: House Oversight Chairman Elijah Cummings, House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff and House Foreign Affairs Chairman Elliot Engel.

Remembering A Great American: Edwin Fancher, 1923-2023

Norman Mailer, seated, Ed Fancher and Dan Wolf, founders of The Village Voice

If you are lucky in your life, you come to know one or two people who made you who you are other than your parents who gave you the extraordinary gift of life. Edwin Fancher, who it is my sad duty to inform you died last Wednesday in his apartment on Gramercy Park at the age of 100, is one such person in my life. He was one of the three founders of The Village Voice, the Greenwich Village weekly that became known as the nation’s first alternative newspaper. The Voice, and he, were so much more than that.
