Fearmongers Fail: Major Crimes Hit Record Low In Mamdani's New York

Fox News and right-wing media spent last year's New York City mayoral election fearmongering that Zohran Mamdani's leadership would trigger a surge in violent crime. Now, five months into Mamdani's term as mayor, major crimes are at historic lows.

Recent New York City crime data shows significant drops in murders and shootings, according to New York Daily News:

Crime across the Big Apple has hit historic lows, with record reductions in murders, shooting incidents and shooting victims, according to the NYPD.
Major crime across the city declined 10.6% across the five boroughs — and more than 6% in the city’s subways — in May, according to the latest Police Department figures.
Year to date, murders were down nearly 21%, 102 versus 129 at this time last year, the lowest level ever recorded for the first five months of any year, beating the previous record of 113, set in 2014 and 2017, officials said.
Even New York City’s public housing projects are off to their safest year in history, with the fewest murders, shooting incidents, shooting victims and robberies, according to the positive stats.

Right-wing media painted a much darker picture for New York last year. After Mamdani's primary win, Fox News host Laura Ingraham scrolled through images of 1970s “urban blight” and warned that Mamdani's leadership would transport the city back to a time when “crime was out of control.”

Ingraham's right-wing media cohorts made similar assertions. On Sean Hannity’s radio show, disgraced former Fox host Bill O’Reilly recalled telling his daughter, who lives in Manhattan, “Look, if this guy wins, your lifestyle has to change because crime, violent crime, is going to be a factor in your life. You're not going to be able to go out by yourself at night or even twilight.”

After Mamdani's victory in the general election, Fox Business host Cheryl Casone commented on New York crime rates, with Fox host Kayleigh McEnany responding, “It's going to get worse. … When I look at Mamdani's policies, he wants to end the gang database, which [Police Commissioner Jessica] Tisch has credited with bringing down crime.”

Hannity predicted “the biggest crime wave New York will ever have seen” and “the complete destruction of New York City” if Mamdani was elected.

Fox, which recently warned that Mamdani's affordable housing proposal will lead to “mass killing,” will likely continue to fearmonger throughout Mamdani's term.

Phoning In To Cable Town Hall, Trump Provokes Mocking Laughter

Phoning In To Cable Town Hall, Trump Provokes Mocking Laughter

President Donald Trump joined a town hall appearance by phone on the NewsNation network Wednesday night, and the audience couldn't hold their laughter after hearing his response to one particular question.

The town hall, which was hosted by former CNN host Chris Cuomo and former Fox News host Bill O'Reilly, included progressive activist Nina Turner and sports talk host Stephen A. Smith. At one point, O'Reilly read a question from an audience member asking Trump what he felt was his biggest mistake of the first 100 days of his second term.

"I'll tell you, that's the toughest question I can have because I don't really think I've made any mistakes," Trump said, prompting audible laughter from the audience.

Trump's response to the question was met with mockery and ridicule on social media, with musician Nikos Unity tweeting: "The biggest mistake was thinking that was a real answer." Historian Beth Martin suggested that Trump's unwillingness to admit to mistakes hinted at a glaring personality flaw.

"Malignant narcissists cannot admit to mistakes, even understandable small mistakes," she wrote. "They cannot acknowledge or face their mistakes, so they also never learn from them."

On Bluesky, University of South Australia lecturer Dr. Collette Snowden quipped that Trump was "sounding more and more like a shoe sales guy who claims the shoes will fit better and be soooo comfortable once they're worn in, or stretched ... but you know they're never going to fit." SiriusXM host Dean Obeidallah simply responded with "LOL."

"Ego and vanity working overtime as usual," writer David Hirsch posted to Bluesky. "Surprised if he doesn't plan to get their names for 'audits' and surveillance."

Former Fox Host Bill O'Reilly Taped Bullying Airline Employee (VIDEO)

Former Fox Host Bill O'Reilly Taped Bullying Airline Employee (VIDEO)

Some right-wing media figures who can be combative and abrasive on the air can be surprisingly nice off the air; the late Irv Homer, a libertarian radio host in Philadelphia, once commented that as “bellicose” as right-wing radio host Tom Marr (who died in 2016) was on the air, he could be genuinely nice away from the microphone. But former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly, on the other hand, has a reputation for being as much of a bully off the air as he is on the air — and he lived up to that reputation during a Sunday, April 17 incident at New York City’s John F. Kennedy Airport.

Video posted on Twitter shows O’Reilly bullying an employee of JetBlue Airlines at JFK, where the right-wing radio host was upset because his flight to the Turks and Caicos Islands was delayed.

An angry O’Reilly can be seen in the video calling the employee a “fucking scumbag” and threatening, “You’re gonna lose your job.”

At one point in the video, the employee can be heard saying, “You’re threatening me with violence” — to which O’Reilly replies, “No, I’m not. You’re the one.”

O’Reilly, true to form, painted himself as the victim. But some Twitter users have responded that the video speaks for itself.
