Crime, Policing, And The Reality Of America's Cities

Here's a policing story with a happy ending: Deputies in Deltona, Florida, recently stopped a black jogger who fit the description of a burglary suspect. The jogger, Joseph Griffin, is a former military police officer and currently a registered nurse. Griffin knew to be calm and cooperative.

The deputy asked Griffin to bear with him. He said he had to detain him but added, "Buddy, you're not in trouble or anything."

Racist Dog Walker Charged For False Police Report On Black Bird Watcher

Reprinted with permission from DailyKos

Back in May, a former investment insurance manager at Franklin Templeton made headlines after a video of her wilding out on a Black bird watcher went viral. In the video, Amy Cooper went very bananas when asked to put her dog on a leash as she walked around an area of New York City's Central Park known as The Ramble. Cooper, who is white, went all out in the weird and dangerous racist department when she threatened to call (and then did call) 911 to report that Christian Cooper—a Black man—was "threatening her life."

In fact, she made sure to explain that she was going to very explicitly reference Christian Cooper's race when reporting this fake emergency. Now, ABC News reports that Amy Cooper has been charged with "falsely reporting an incident in the third degree." This was the only detail released by Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance's office.

Christian Cooper’s Super Power Is Self Control

I come here not to condemn Amy Cooper, the white woman who called police and falsely claimed that an African American man named Christian Cooper was attacking her, but rather to praise Christian Cooper, who had done nothing more than ask her to leash her dog. The confrontation happened in New York's Central Park, where dogs are supposed to be kept on leashes.

National media pounced on this tale of two unrelated Coopers, captured by Christian on video. The easy storyline focused on a clash between an evil racist and a blameless black victim. Christian had been out in the park bird-watching, of all things.
