Anti-Government Resistance Now The Beating Heart Of GOP

Share

Some folks thought it was “inflammatory.” Some said it was “irresponsible,” others, “absurd,” still others, “disappointing.”

Those are some of the words affronted conservatives used in emails last month to describe my column on the 20th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing. In it, I noted how Timothy McVeigh’s act of domestic terrorism shed light on a movement of like-minded zealots motivated, as he was, by hatred of the federal government and rejection of its authority.

“Twenty years ago,” I wrote, “the idea of anti-government resistance seemed confined to a lunatic fringe operating in the shadows beyond the mainstream. Twenty years later, it is the mainstream, the beating heart of the Republican Party. And while certainly no responsible figure on the right advocates or condones what he did, it is just as certain that McVeigh’s violent antipathy toward Washington, his conviction that America’s government is America’s enemy, has bound itself to the very DNA of modern conservatism.”

That’s the argument conservatives found “hateful” “sickening,” and “dishonest.”

So it is, depending upon your religious outlook, a fortuitous coincidence or superfluous evidence of God’s puckish sense of humor that a few days later comes news of conservatives accusing the federal government of trying to take over the state of Texas. It seems the four branches of the U.S. military are gearing up for Operation Jade Helm 15, an eight-week training exercise across seven states. Right-wing conspiracy theorists online and on radio are claiming the exercise is actually a pretext for a federal takeover of the Lone Star State, with — get this — abandoned Walmarts to be used for the processing of prisoners!

Nor is this being laughed off by conservatives in positions of authority. To the contrary, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has ordered the state guard to monitor the exercise to safeguard Texan’s “civil liberties.” Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert has asked the military to change the exercise. Senator and presidential wannabe Ted Cruz said he checked with the Pentagon and while he accepts that it has no plans to conquer Texas — how magnanimous of him — “I understand the reason for concern and uncertainty” because the Obama administration “has not demonstrated itself to be trustworthy.”

Forgive me if I don’t spend a lot of space pointing out that this is stupid, though I can’t resist asking: If the Navy, Army, Marines, and Air Force were, indeed, planning to take over Texas, just what does Gov. Abbott think the state guard would be able to do about it?

There is, however, a more pressing observation to be made. After all, chances are good you’ve never heard about any of this — the story hasn’t garnered major headlines — and that, hearing of it now, you are not terribly surprised. That speaks pointedly of how inured we have become to the insane, paranoiac, anti-government prattle flowing like sewage from the political right. Duly elected leaders, putatively responsible people, give credence to the crazy idea that the federal government is about to attack its second most populous state and we shrug because it’s just another Tuesday in the lunatic asylum of American politics.

Look, I get it: No one wants to be compared to McVeigh. And I’ll repeat: No one in a position of responsibility embraces his prescription of terrorist violence. But it seems to me beyond argument that in the philosophical struggle for the soul of conservatism, he lost the battle and won the war. Much of what now passes for conservatism proceeds from extremes of government loathing that would have stunned Ronald Reagan himself.

Some of my readers used many colorful words to characterize that argument. Here’s the word I’d use:

Obvious.

To the lunatic fringe of the Republican party (which is the driving force of most of the party’s polemic), the truth hurts.

Of course we are not surprised about any of the craziness coming from Texas. What can we think about a State that has elected the likes of Louis Gohmert to congress….six times I believe. Followed by electing Ted Cruz. Just as nutty…but actually scarier, because he is more polished. So, not only are we not surprised. We now expect this craziness.

I don’t think I would call Cruz “polished.” “Sweaty,” perhaps. Definitely “oily.” Certainly “slippery.” Maybe even “greasy,” but given his Hispanic heritage, that conjures up some unpleasant echoes of hate-speech. Let’s not go there.

No, I would call him “carefully-crafted.” He’s a marvel of demographic pandering, achieved by diligent attention to whichever fringe groups are loudest and most obnoxious, because such groups can primary him out in a heartbeat if he fails to deliver the angry, contemptuous rhetoric they demand.

It always gets me that these people are always afraid their rights are being take away and/or they want to take back their country. Who are they going to take it back from? They usually are the ones who want to walk into Walmart or some other business carrying their AR15 and scaring the heck out of everyone else, and if they can’t then someone is taking away their rights. . Worse yet these are what is called the base of the Republican party. Throw in a few fundamentalists and the base is complete.

What you might not understand is that these far-right crazies aren’t speaking in plain English; they’re speaking in code. The far right equates Constitutional rights with unearned social privileges for straight (or at least closeted gay), Christian (read: Protestant fundamentalist), rich white males.
When they say “take their country back”, they mean tyrannical domination of anyone who isn’t a Christianist, fundamentalist, white male. When they say “rights”, they really mean privilege. In other words, they resent having their unearned privileges being taken from them, such as the license to discriminate against women and minorities with impunity.
To sum up: I understand the GOP dog whistle politics, but don’t accept it. Republicans sometimes forget cats can hear dog whistles better than the dogs can.

        A few more dog whistles:

The GOP uses a different definition of “voter fraud” than the rest of the world. For them voter fraud means voting democratic.

The GOP uses a different definition of “negotiation” than the rest of the world. For them negotiation means you give me what I want and you get nothing.

The GOP uses a different definition of “illegal/unconstitutional.” For them illegal/unconstitutional means doing something they don’t like.

The GOP uses a different definition of “fiscal responsibility.” For them fiscal responsibility means giving the wealthy more wealth, even if it means deficit spending and more Fed debt.

Please do not lump all of we Christians into one basket. True Christians follow the words of Christ. Give, even when you cannot afford to do so. Be tolerant of all people, telling them of the joy of having Christ in your heart. Be meek, turn the other cheek. Oh, and lest we forget, do not judge others, you will have your own shortcomings to answer for. I could go on, but you get my meaning, I hope. Half my family are Evangelical Christians, the other half range from less Dogmatic, to full blown Athiests…guess what? We all love each other. My sister is a 100% Lesbian, and most of us don’t care, and love her, for the caring, generous, wonderful woman that she is.

You are talking about a lunatic fringe. Sadly, the so called Liberal media, thrives on the absurd. Why this whole Texas nonsense ever got air time on CNN, is exactly what gets my goat. Let FAUX News report the insanity. Where are the folks in Mainstream Media, who should be shouting to any who can hear them, just how insane these RWNJ’s sound?? Bill Maher says it best, “The Democrats sometimes are Pussies!”.

I think you misunderstand the code. When they say “take our country back” what they really mean is restoring the Confederacy — so they can run things the way that they prefer, and forget that they actually lost the Civil War.

Sometime back I thought you had reached the maximum point of being ridiculous, but you never seem to amaze me at your utter stupidity and posts of total nonsense.

When are people like you going to get of this calling Obama a socialist??

When virtually everything about America today -that’s been established over the past 230 plus years – are clearly socialist program after program that we all live with and depend on today.

Here nitwit – identify for us which of these 75 socialist programs you’d be willing to give up:

          Here’s the 1st 10 – follow the link for the other 65:

Well I hate to be the one to tell you, but Socialism, which you have been told to fear all your life, is responsible for all this…

          1. The Military/Defense – The United States military is the largest and most funded socialist program in the world. It operates thanks to our taxpayer dollars and protects the country as a whole. From the richest citizens to the homeless who sleep under the bridge. We are all protected by our military whether we pay taxes or not. This is complete socialism.

          2. Highways/Roads – Those roads and highways you drive on every single day are completely taxpayer funded. Your tax dollars are used to maintain, expand, and preserve our highways and roads for every one’s use. President Eisenhower was inspired by Germany’s autobahn and implemented the idea right here in America. That’s right, a republican president created our taxpayer funded, national highway system. This was a different time, before the republican party came down with a vicious case of rabies that never went away.

          3. Public Libraries – Yes. That place where you go to check out books from conservative authors telling you how horrible socialism is, is in fact socialism. Libraries are taxpayer funded. You pay a few bucks to get a library card and you can read books for free for the rest of your life.

          4. Police – Ever had a situation where you had to call the police? Then you have used a taxpayer funded socialist program. Anyone can call the police whether they pay taxes or not. They are there to protect and serve the community, not individuals. This is complete socialism on a state level, but still socialism all the same. Would you rather have to swipe your credit card before the police will help you?

          5. Fire Dept. – Hopefully you have never had a fire in your home. But if you have, you probably called your local taxpayer-funded fire department to put the fire out. Like police, this is state socialism. You tax dollars are used to rescue your entire community in case of a fire. It use to be set up where you would pay a fee every month to the fire dept. for their service. If you didn’t pay, they let your house burn down. Sadly, a man from Tennessee had this exact situation happen to him in 2011 because he didn’t pay his $75.00 fee. I guess that small town in Tennessee would rather let people’s houses burn down that resort to evil socialism. So don’t take for granted the fact that you have a 24/7 fire dept. to put out your burning home thanks to socialism.

          6. Postal Service – Like having mail delivered directly to your front door and paying next to nothing to send mail anywhere you want? Well it’s all made possible by socialism.

          7. Student Loans and Grants – Did you go to College? If you did, you family might not have been rich enough to pay your way through. So you got your education anyway through student loans and grants from the federal government at taxpayer expense. Of course you have to pay back the loans, but if not the government, did you know anyone else who was going to lend you tens of thousands of dollars? Probably not. So the taxpayers lent you the money and you paid it back with slight interest. The government grants you accepted were gifts from the taxpayer and the federal government that you did not have to pay back. Socialism got you through school.

          8. Bridges – Along with our highways, our government used your taxpayer dollars to build bridges. This allows the public to travel across rivers without having to sail or swim.

          9. Garbage Collection – Like having your garbage collected once a week instead of having to drive it to the landfill yourself? Thank socialism.

          10. Public Landfills – Taxpayer dollars are used to have places to dump all of our garbage that is collected by taxpayer funded garbage men.

Medical, yes, because every hospital is required to provide medical care for anyone in need, including YOU, bubba. But it’s not free. All patients without insurance are ALWAYS billed and many end up hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. (Serves ’em right, huh? How DARE they be so poor!) Wanna change that? Might be a bit of a risk if you’re brought in bleeding and you have no ID “proving” that you’re “entitled” to life-saving treatment.

BTW, once you write the check or it’s deducted from your pay, that money is no longer yours. It’s OURS and the bozos we elect decide what to do with it. That’s called “representative government.” You asked for it, you voted for it, you got it. Got a better idea? I didn’t think so.

I pay a whole lot of taxes ,all from money earned and I’m perfectly happy when mine go toward helping people who haven’t had the same opportunities in life just to be able to eat at some point during a day and to ensure mothers have prenatal care and babies have access to nourishment . However once my taxes are paid, I can only hope some of it will be used for those purposes. To ensure it, I have to supplement the charitable organizations I know who focus on that goal.
How dare you presume to lecture anyone about working or following laws or make the assumption they don’t. It’s somehow a bad thing to care about fellow humans, be your brother’s keeper and give a hand up to those less fortunate?
This idea that what’s mine is mine and to hell with everyone else has to stop if we want to continue as a great nation. Providing lip service and pretending to be religious is what the right has to offer in terms of their idea of good deeds.
The healthier we all are individually . the more educated each person is, the better nourished each child, the stronger and more prosperous the nation as a whole will be. It’s always been that way and we the people have always helped each other in concrete ways by putting their money where our mouth is. I don’t mind being called a bleeding heart liberal. It’s a compliment. It means I care and haven’t lost my humanity. On the other hand I’d be ashamed to be called a republican these days.

            From mintpressnews.com:

‘Pants On Fire’: Analysis Shows 60% Of Fox News ‘Facts’ Are Really Lies

MINNEAPOLIS — Analysis of Fox News suggests that the TV news network is a leader in lying to the American public, beating out CNN and MSNBC for the amount of falsehoods broadcasted.

The analysis comes from Punditfact, a partnership between the Tampa Bay Times and Politifact.com, which maintains scorecards on the accuracy of major TV news networks. As of January, about 60 percent of facts reported by Fox News were false.

Criticizing the accuracy of Fox News is not a new pursuit — comedians like Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert built substantial portions of their career out of spotlighting the network’s lies and misdirection. Stewart is so well-known as an opponent that he made headlines in March for admitting Fox had actually been correct in one, specific instance.

Fox News’ falsehoods gained particular notoriety in the wake of Islamic-extremist terrorist attacks in Europe earlier this year, when Fox began claiming that neighborhoods and even entire cities were off-limits to non-Muslims. Fans of Fox continue to repeat the claim, even though it’s been debunked by everyone fromlocal residents of these regions to British Prime Minister David Cameron. The controversy gave rise to the Twitter hashtag #foxnewsfacts, which is still popular today.

In an earlier rant you posted some inane nonsense about Obama being responsible for the IRS harrassing conservatives when NO SUCH THING EVER HAPPENED!!

It was Darrell Issa and Faux News that concocted a FAKE IRS SCANDAL!! Fact is, when that happened, the IRS was actually holding up far more PROGRESSIVE applications than they were IRS. It was Darrell Issa who insisted that the IRS over scrutinize
some IRS applications so he and Faux News could make a FAKE SCANDAL OUT OF IT!!

Warner took the fifth because 1) The IRS had done nothing but try to do it’s job – they had done nothing wrong. 2) Therefore Issa had no business or right to be asking the questions he was asking and 3) Warner didn’t want to come out and tell Issa in front of the nation that he was a big LIAR perpetrating a huge fraud on the the American people!!!! (She probably knew about Issa’s devious meeting with the IRS inspector general where the two of them, both Republicans, cooked up the fake IRS scandal.)

And more of your lies and distortions of the truth!!

There are no ‘millions of illegal immigrants, invading anywhere. The vast majority of illegals in America came here during Bush 2s presidency. Illegals crossing our borders to day are at the lowest levels in several decades because Obama continued what Bush started toward the end of his presidency and finished building stretches of the wall and adding more border guards. In fact, there are no so many border guards that there has actually been incidents of them shooting themselves via friendly fire because they’re getting in each others way.

And what Obama has proposed IS NO AMNESTY!! That’s just one more of your lies!. Unlike the Amnesty that Reagan and Bush 1 gave illegals where they were not required to even pay any back taxes, be able to pass a secuity check to prove they aren’t criminals and don’t have a criminal record, or get in the back of the line in applying for citizenship while paying all the costs and time associated with that – which is what Obama’s policy is demanding.

And Obama is not breaking any laws or setting any precedents in the way he’s treating today’s immigrants. He’s doing absolutely nothing that past presidents hadn’t already done. And being president, he has the right through the Executive Branch to apply whatever guidelines the Executive Brand thinks is necessary in handling the immigration situation – without any say so or approval needed from Congress. The Executive Branch has the charge of implementing our laws in a manner that is in the best interests of the country and its people. And it’s the Executive Branch, not Congress, who is charged with deciding what those guidelines should be. Congress only writes laws, IT DOES NOT GET INVOLVED WITH DECIDING HOW THOSE LAWS WILL BE ENFORCED!!! WHICH IS WHY GEORGE BUSH APPLIED A SIGNING STATEMENT TO EVERY LAW HE SIGNED INDICATING HOW THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH WOULD GO ABOUT ENFORCING THE LAW AND EVEN WHAT PORTIONS OF A LAW HE HAD NO INTENTION OF ENFORCING!!!

Why? Because of the same reason a proposal to make it harder for criminals and the mentally ill to buy guns becomes evidence of Obama planning to take the guns away from the American people. For the same reason a program to make affordable healthcare accessible to all Americans, regardless of financial means, is compared to death panels. The reason so many Texans, not all or even a majority, give credence to conspiracy theories like this is not because there is evidence to support the irrational claims we hear, or because they are so ignorant that they do not understand how ridiculous their statements are. The reason for the bizarre claims we hear from a small, but vociferous segment of the GOP is influenced by the intense hatred of Barack Obama and what he represents to them.

Look, the simple fact is that these people are religious thinkers. They demand no evidence, they demand purity of belief. That, mixed with some serious authority worship issues have degraded the Republican party to what it currently is. I know that being “degraded” from the Nixon administration is a hefty task, but it’s been done to near perfection.

This party basically appeals to the same people that used to read the Daily Globe in the checkout line for their news in the 1980s. It’s no longer a political ethos. It’s simply a religious movement cross-pollinated with militarism and some political hucksterism left over from the Birch/Goldwater/Reagan movements.

There’s no solution but to wait for them to die off.

    Reply
    1. MichelleRose3 May 11, 2015

Uh, no. That’s not a solution because most of them are crazy enough to start a war, either a race war or World War Three if they can manage it. Remember that these insane people believe that the Rapture is coming and if they provoke Armageddon, they’ll be taken to Heaven without the inconvenient pain of dying first. Consider that they regard it as their Christian duty to start a war, any war.

The only way to deal with a religious fanatic is to give him or her what they want: an exit from this world, as quickly as possible. They don’t like this world. It scares them and angers them because it isn’t what they were promised in church and they can’t comprehend it.

As for Birchers, libertarians and anti-government traitors, well, there are remarkably few effective ways to deal with fascists of that sort but those ways tend to be quite effective when dispassionately applied.

This is absurd. To start at the top, you assert, as do most liberals as well as the liberal media, that the Republican Party is the war party, that we have a history of waging war, that we will continue to wage war and, in your words, actively seek it out and will start a war. However, quite the contrary is true. Every major war that this country has fought in the 20th-century was entered into and waged by democrats. First, Woodrow Wilson entered World War I. Second, FDR entered World War II, and his successor Truman dropped the nuke on Japan. Also, Truman involved us in the Kirean War. Third, JFK launched the Bay of Pigs invasion and entered Vietnam. His successor, LBJ escalated our involvement in Vietnam, and it was Nixon, a republican who backed us out. Finally, Obama has bombed more countries than any other president and has launched more drone strikes than Bush or any other president. So, to say that the Republicans are the war party is simply fallacious and constitutes a reckless disregard for history.

Your argument about the race war is also absurd. Let us not forget that the Republican Party (though quite different then as it is now) was founded as an abolitionist party, freed the slaves and authored the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments. Let us also not forget that it was Eisenhower, a republican, that advocated for the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and employed national guard in Arkansas to implement school integration following Brown, while it was the democrats who filibustered the bill in congress. Tell me, why all of a sudden is it some national crisis that black men are getting killed by cops and riots ensuing as a result? Just now all of a sudden people are fed up with it? It’s a strange coincidence that this all results during Obama’s presidency and yet we never heard about it before. I’ll tell you why that is: it is yet another way for liberals to try and get votes because that is the only way you can get votes. You play on the emotions and ignorance of the masses and blow issues out of proportion in order to get votes. It’s classic demagoguery, and Obama has done nothing but worsen the situation by inflaming racial tensions that do not exist, at least at the level you people make it out to be. Does racism exist? Absolutely, but to say we have a serious race problem is ridiculous and propagated for the reasons detailed above. We do not have a nationwide race problem when we have a black president, black Supreme Court justices, black congressmen and women, and people look up to black people, adore their music and culture, etc. The real race war is not white vs. black, but black vs. black. Last year, between 400-500 black men were killed by police officers, with some justified and others not (funny how we don’t hear about white kids getting killed by police officers; it happened in my hometown and it didn’t make national headlines because it does nothing for people politically). But last year, over 10,000 black men were killed by other black men. That is the real tragedy, and I don’t see anyone talking about this or doing anything to help. Why? you may ask. Simple: once again, that does nothing for these liberals in power. If Obama or any other person came out and said that, he’d be hated and deemed to have abandoned black community. He had an opportunity to do amazing things, but he blew it and has done nothing but incite violence and inflame tensions. Also tragic is the fact that black people call other blacks uncle toms and traitors on the black community simply because they aren’t thugs, but rather well-educated, moral and conduct themselves as gentlemen or ladies. Furthermore, to say that republicans engage in a race war simply because we don’t support affirmative action or similar programs is absurd. How is that true when the purpose of our beliefs is to make people equal and held to the same standards. As Clarence Thomas notes in several decisions on the matter, black people are just as capable and intelligent as anyone else, and he is a shining example since he taught himself how to read while growing up on a dirt floor. I agree with that assessment. These programs are only meant to hold the black community down and make them dependent on the government. It is yet another way to get votes. Since Obama has taken office, more black people are on welfare and food stamps than ever before. That is proof these programs aren’t meant to help black people or any other person and raise them up, but rather to subjugate them.

Regarding your comments about Christianity, you are simply misguided. Nowhere in the Bible does Jesus say to wage war, and I have never learned of such a thing in church. You should go read Saint Augustine as well. It’s also troubling of you to say that you essentially wish Christians to die off and exit the world, but I’m not surprised at your comment, for its indicative of liberals and their lack of morality, civility and war on religion. I’m a Christian and I don’t hate the world. sure, things bother me and are not as I would hope, but I don’t hate it and I love life and extremely fortunate to live such a good life and experience so many great things, even sitting here conversing with you. Your ideas of religion, however, are just wrong.

Finally, how are libertarians fascists? In short, Libertarians advocate for minimal government, freedom and civil liberties, whereas fascism advocates totalitarian rule. Those two ideals are quite different. You should read up on, not only Christianity, but also political philosophy, as well as American history.

You love to make up history don’t you?? Neither Wilson nor FDR “led us into a war”. Both of those wars were started by the enemy – Wilson only entered WWI when German submarines started harassing our ships in the shipping lanes
and Britain had also asked for our help in fighting the Germans. And FDR did’t “lead” us into war either – he didn’t ask for a declaration of war until the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor to add to once again a request for help from Britain.

Truman got us into the Korean war, for the same reason that Republican president Eisenhower got us into fighting in Laos – to try and stop the spread of Communism. And it was the fighting in Laos which eventually spread into Vietnam. JFK did not start the fighting in Vietnam, he just happened to be the president when the fighting their spread.

And had Nixon not created treason by negotiating with the North Vietnamese and convincing them to not continue to meet with LBJ when he was trying to get a peace treaty negotiated, it’s altogether possible the fighting in Vietnam could have ended 5 years before it did with a lot of American lives saved. Had LBJ been able to get himself re-elected, he was going to have Nixon tried for treason.

And you conveniently forgot to mention that Bush 1 did in fact get us into a war with Iraq over Kuwait; and then Bush 2 LIED US into a war with Iraq which cost 4,500 Americans their lives; and it was his and Cheney’s refusal to allow the CIA to try and stop the 9/11 attack by bin Laden – that may well be why that attack didn’t happen and it was necessary for Bush 2 to get us into the longest war of American history in Afghanistan!!!

And your diatribe about race is pure hogwash. The vast majority of Republicans today are the old southern Dixiecrats that were once Democrats but since the Civil Rights act became Republicans and are as racist as they ever were. What was the party of Lincoln back in the 1860s is really the Democrat party of today; based on their names – the partys’ have reversed roles. Anyone with a brain can see that the Republicans of today who proudly wave Confederate flags are descendants of those who fought against the Union.

It was THE ENEMY that got us into WWI and WWII by ATTACKING AMERICA OR IT’S SHIPPING!! WE DID NOT DELIBERATELY GO TO WAR WITHOUT PROVOCATION YOU IDIOT!! YOU’RE STUPIDITY IS REALLY GETTING ME TICKED OFF IF YOU HAVEN’T NOTICED!!!

Wilson actually tried to keep us neutral in early 1910s but it was Germany’s provocation that got to be too much!!

            See this from wikipedia:

The United States’ entry into World War I came in April 1917, after two and a half years of efforts by President Woodrow Wilson to keep the United States neutral during World War I. Americans had no idea that war was imminent in Europe in the summer of 1914, and tens of thousands of tourists were caught by surprise. The U.S. government, under Wilson’s firm control, called for neutrality “in thought and deed”.[1]

However, the citizenry increasingly came to see the German Empire as the villain after news of atrocities in Belgium in 1914, and the sinking of the passenger liner RMS Lusitania in 1915 in defiance of international law.

*Sigh* I don’t often resort to calling people names, and I don’t do it lightly.

JFK was a great President. So was Bill Clinton. Neither was great because they were Democrats. They were outstanding because of who they were, not the political label they chose to wear. Obama does not measure up to either of them, but you seem incapable of discerning the difference.

Using labels to judge people is a lazy way out. Defending or condemning a person because of their preferred label goes beyond lazy.

            Not all Democrats are great.
            Not all Republicans are evil.
            Not all whites are racist.
Not all blacks are innocent victims.

The only thing we all have in common is that we are human. And humans are not perfect, but some are sometimes better than others in different ways.

You have repeatedly displayed an inability to judge people as individuals. Using a label as your only guide to a person’s character shows a lack of intelligence.

Saying that republican Presidents always get us into wars because they WANT to, but Democratic Presidents only get us into wars because they HAVE NO CHOICE is inane.

I stand by my original assessment. You are a moron.

You don’t call people names and that makes you special how?

And you base your opinions based on your own biases, and that makes you special how?

For example you make this comment:

JFK was a great President. So was Bill Clinton. Neither was great because they were Democrats. They were outstanding because of who they were, not the political label they chose to wear. Obama does not measure up to either of them, but you seem incapable of discerning the difference.

Although I won’t disagree with you about the 1st 2 presidents, but I’ll guarantee you that there are many people that will. And you made those judgments based purely on your own opinion and not on facts?? I defy you to identify something concrete that JFK did which has been long-term beneficial to the average American.

And I’ll ask you the same thing about Clinton. Aside from the fact that the American economy performed better under Clinton than under any previous president – what did Bill really do that American’s today can hang their hat on?? Did he get anything passed that compares to Social Security under FDR; or Medicare and the Civil Rights Act under LBJ?? All laws that are significantly impacting Americans’ lives today?? What did either of them do that gives you the right to say that JFK and Clinton were “Great Presidents”?? Your opinion???

And I’ll adamantly disagree with your opinion about Obama not measuring up!! Over the passed 60 years I’m fairly confident that I’ve voted for more presidents and legislators of different political parties than you have. I’ve voted for 3 Republican presidents: Eisenhower, Ford and Bush 1 (I have a large medal from the Bush 1 campaign); and I’ve voted for a number of GOP legislators over the years.

Sadly since Reagan started the destruction of the GOP and Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh sealed the corruption deal – there have only been 3 Republicans in the passed 30 plus years that I would have even remotely have voted for – Bush Sr., Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins.

But getting back to Obama more has been accomplished in Obama’s 6 years in office that has been POSITIVE FOR AMERICA, than was accomplished by all the presidents since FDR to Obama combined.

And the only president in that interim that has come close to accomplishing what’s been done in the past 6 years is LBJ with his getting the Civil Rights Act and Medicare enacted which are greatly influencing peoples’ lives today.
(Eisenhower pushing for the Interstate Highway system has proven to be a big bonus for Americans – but neither Ike nor the GOP legislators that supported the construction of our highways did that for the people. Ike did it primarily because he was impressed with how the German autobahns had made it so easy for the Germans to move their troops around Germany during the war and he convinced GOP legislators to vote on the highway building because of its potential for defense – not because it would be a boon to the American people.)

But getting more to the point on Obama, who you claim doesn’t measure up to Clinton and JFK, what did either of them do that compares to Obama insisting on going ahead with the auto bailout and a stimulus package, which not only saved easily close to 2 million Americans their jobs but also kept America from a 2nd GOP created world-wide depression based on the opinion of a great many economists??

And what did JFK or Clinton ever do that compares to getting the first comprehensive healthcare legislation passed that will impact Americans’ lives for decades and which has already been projected to have kept over 75,000 Americans from dying prematurely over the past 15 months or so??

And what did JFK and Clinton ever do that compares with the fact that under Obama, America has become the largest producer of gas and oil on the planet for the first time in history?

Or what did JFK and Clinton ever do that compares with the fact that despite GOP opposition, Obama has done more with respect to immigration, and that includes rounding up and deporting more troublesome illegal aliens than any two previous presidents combined?

Or what did JFK and Clinton ever do that compares to Obama having begun a war on fraud in the defense and healthcare sectors within weeks of taking office, that has brought more crooks to justice and fraud monies recovered (billions of dollars) than any two previous presidents??

Or what did JFK and Clinton ever do which exceeds the fact that despite GOP 24/7 obstructionism and an admitted objective of sabotaging our economy to make Obama a one-term president, Obama succeeded in turning the worst recession since the Big Depression faster than had ever occurred before (within less than 1 year), and has reduced a 10.1% unemployment rate to 5.4% faster and to the lowest rate than any previous president in history?? And is now enjoying the 62nd straight month of positive jobs growth which is more than one year longer than the previous record??

Or what did JFK and Clinton ever do, which exceeds Obama’s accomplishment of having energized the alternative energy sector of America’s economy, such that more alternative energy jobs have been created over the passed 4 years than were ever created before combined – and has the alternative energy sector primed to make fossil fuels obsolete within the next decade or so (if not obsolete, at least needed only for back up to energy created by wind, solar, tidal, plasma and hydro)???

And I could go on and on outlining accomplishments under Obama, that no president since FDR has even come close to accomplishing. And all of that despite 24/7 deliberate obstructionism from a political party that has become totally corrupt to the point that it stands alone as America’s worst enemy. More dangerous than ISIS or al Qaeda or any other outside force – the GOP is working to destroy America from within!!!!!!!!

I take back my assessment. Not because I agree with you, but because you have managed to have an opinion. Bravo.

You berated me for expressing my own opinions, but you have countered with…your own opinions. No, they are not facts. They are interpretations of events.

You are right about Ike’s motivation for building the Interstate system. I’m impressed. Most people get that one wrong.

            But on Obama’s accomplishments….no.

I don’t have time to write a dissertation as long as yours so I’ll just point out that Obama deserves absolutely no credit for the energy boom. He has done everything he could do to promote green energy and to prevent increased production of fossil fuels. It happened because of technology that Obama couldn’t stop. But dream on.

I’m just going to post for you some excerpts from a factcheck on Obama’s affects on oil and gas production:

Oil production on federal lands and in federal waters has seen an overall increase under Obama. And natural gas production under federal jurisdiction has been falling since 2003, long before Obama took office.

overall, oil production in areas under federal jurisdiction increased under Obama. We again compared the last three full fiscal years of Bush’s term with the next three years, a period that falls almost entirely under Obama’s time in office

Oil production on federal lands and in federal waters grew by 14 percent — or 241 million barrels of oil — during that time (see table 2).

(The increase is 15 percent when we exclude fiscal year 2009 and compare fiscal years 2007 and 2008 with 2010 and 2011.)

Adam Sieminski, the administrator of the EIA, explained to Congress in August that oil production on federal lands and in federal waters is dominated by offshore drilling. He said the decrease in production in 2011 reflects the impact and aftermath of the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. As we noted before, the Obama administration instituted a temporary moratorium on new drilling following the spill.

But Sieminski offered a more complex explanation for why natural gas production on federal lands and in federal waters has declined, stating that federal policies are only one factor.

Natural gas production on federal lands and in federal waters has fallen 9 percent overall under Obama (see table 3). We again compared the last three full fiscal years of Bush’s term with the next three years.

(The decrease is 12 percent when we exclude fiscal year 2009 and compare fiscal years 2007 and 2008 with 2010 and 2011.)

But natural gas production on federal lands and in federal waters has been falling since 2003. Sieminski credited the decline with the boom in the method of extracting gas from shale formations, known as hydraulic fracturing or “fracking,” which occurs mostly on private and state-owned lands.

Fracking has driven down the price of natural gas. And as a result, Sieminski explained, drilling on federal lands and in federal waters has become a less attractive method for producing natural gas.

What’s your point? Fracking is responsible for the increase in production. Did Obama invent it? Did he do anything to encourage it? No. So how do you give him credit for our increased energy independence?

I am not surprised at any utterly stupid thing the GOP comes up with ever since their claim that Governor Clinton had forced the CIA to smuggle drugs into their base in Arkansas. Yep, I can see it now. The governor of a third rate Southern state shows up with his state trooper driver at the CIA base and they frighten all of Bush’s CIA operatives into doing Clinton’s bidding. One governor and a six-shooter toting trooper facing down a few hundred CIA operatives armed with assault rifles. That makes perfect sense to conservatives.

When top representatives of their party show such disrespect for a president, government agencies and laws they themselves have been instrumental in writing, all to garner support for their own personal agendas and to pacify the very freaks they invited in should own fully their responsibility for creating an anti-government atmosphere. They are anything but patriots.

Allegations once again based on misinformation/lies. That’s all you RWNJs know how to do is distort the truth and lie!!

See these excerpts from ABCNews article”

The senior supervisor agent is telling me about how their mission is now to scare people back,” Dever said. “I had to go back to my guys and tell them not to catch anybody, that their job is to chase people away. They were not to catch anyone, arrest anyone. Their job was to set up posture, to intimidate people, to get them to go back.”

Border Patrol Chief Michael Fisher sent a letter to Dever Tuesday strongly refuting his claim, which appears to have been based on a single, unidentified source.

“That assertion is completely, 100 percent false,” Fisher said in the letter obtained by ABC News. “And most disturbingly, it unfairly casts a negative light on the hard work done each day in service to the nation and at risk to themselves by the men and women of the Border Patrol.”

“That it comes from a fellow law enforcement official makes it especially offensive,” he wrote.

Fisher said the Border Patrol’s policy is to apprehend and arrest every illegal border crosser, and he invited Dever to ride along with border agents to see the reality of the work they do.

“It is possible notwithstanding your position, that you may remain unaware of the scope of our enforcement efforts across the Southwest Border, particularly in Arizona,” he said.:

Border Wars: Patrol Told to Scare Away Immigrants, Not Arrest Them?

“It is simply inaccurate to state, and too many have, that the border with Mexico is overrun or out of control,” she said in a speech last week.

“This statement I think sometimes is made to score political points. You know, it’s wrong. It’s just plain wrong. Continuing to make these assertions in the face of everything that is happening and everything that has been done not only has negative consequences for our own border communities but it also disrespects the efforts of the law enforcement men and women on that border.”

25 Violations of Law By President Obama and His Administration

Obama Administration uses IRS to target conservative, Christian and pro-Israel organizations, donors, and citizens.

In an unprecedented attack on the First Amendment, the Obama Justice
Department ordered criminal investigations of FOX News reporters for
doing their jobs during the 2012 election year.

President Obama, throughout his Presidency, has refused to enforce long-established U.S. immigration laws. For example . . .

            More
than 300,000 captured illegal aliens had been processed and were
awaiting deportation. But, incredibly, Obama stopped these deportations
and ordered the U.S. border patrol to release many of these illegal
aliens in violation of law and without explanation.

Congress rejected Obama’s so called DREAM ACT – which would have
granted permanent residency to many illegal aliens. So Obama enacted his
own version of the DREAM ACT by Executive Order, thus directly defying
Congress. According to Obama’s Executive Order, illegal aliens can stay
in America if they are under the age of 30, have been in America for at
least five years, are enrolled in school or have graduated from high
school, and have committed no felonies.

Obama has refused to build a double-barrier security fence along the
U.S.-Mexican border in direct violation of the 2006 Secure Fence Act.
This law requires that “at least two layers of reinforced fencing” be
built along America’s 650-mile border with Mexico. So far, just 40 miles
of this fence have been built – most of it during the Bush
            Administration.

Obama’s unconstitutional assault on your Second Amendment Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

President Obama issued, in one day, 21 separate Executive Orders that
attack and undermine your Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.

Especially egregious is President Obama’s Executive Orders amending the ObamaCare law to allow doctors and hospitals to investigate which patients own a gun.
This outrageous Executive Order could allow the federal government to
track and monitor law-abiding gun owners simply because they sought
            medical care.

Obama’s assault on Christians and religious freedom.

Obama’s Health and Human Services Department has, on its own (without
Congressional approval), issued a mandate that all health insurance
plans must include coverage for abortion-inducing drugs. As a result,
pro-life employers and taxpayers are now effectively required by law to
            pay for abortions.

This mandate is an unconstitutional attack on the protections for
freedom of religion and freedom of conscience in the First Amendment and
the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act. This mandate also directly
violates the ObamaCare law enacted by Congress, which prohibits any and
all taxpayer funds from being used to pay for abortions.

Obama forced ObamaCare on an unwilling public through bribery and lying about its cost.

Obama managed to secure passage of ObamaCare by one vote in the
Senate by bribing senators. He bribed Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska
with the notorious “Cornhusker Kickback.” He bribed Senator Mary
Landrieu with the infamous $300 million “Louisiana Purchase.”

In addition, Obama knowingly and blatantly lied to America and to
Congress about how much ObamaCare would really cost. The cost of
ObamaCare to the American people over the next 10 years will not be less
than $1 TRILLION, as Obama promised in his nationally televised speech
to the nation. Instead, the real cost of ObamaCare to the Federal
Treasury is $2.4 TRILLION, according to the non-partisan Congressional
            Budget Office.

But the true cost of ObamaCare is more like $10 TRILLION when you
factor in the cost to the states, the cost to individual Americans who
are now required to purchase Obama-approved health plans (the
“Individual Mandate”), the cost of exploding health insurance premiums,
the $716 billion ObamaCare steals from Medicare, and the increased cost
to businesses of complying with ObamaCare mandates.

            Operation Fast & Furious.

“Operation Fast & Furious” was the Obama Administration’s
gun-running scheme that put thousands of American-made semi-automatic
weapons in the hands of Mexican drug cartels and resulted in the death
of at least one U.S. Border Patrol Agent, Brian Terry. Obama’s Attorney
General Eric Holder lied to Congress and the public, claiming he didn’t
know about his Justice Department’s Fast & Furious operation.

Congress has now held Holder in contempt for defying congressional
subpoenas and refusing to turn over thousands of Justice Department
documents on Fast & Furious. President Obama
asserted Executive Privilege to try to protect Holder. But for Executive
Privilege to apply, Obama would have had to have known about Fast & Furious, making the President as culpable as Holder.

Investigators suspect that Fast & Furious was an effort by the
Obama Administration to discredit lawful gun ownership in America by
purposefully creating gun crimes, thus inducing public outcry for gun
control. When it put thousands of semi-automatic weapons in the hands of
Mexican drug cartels, the Obama Justice Department knew these guns
would be used to commit crimes, perhaps even kill some Americans. Then
Obama could say: “See how dangerous these guns are. We must ban them.”

Without Congressional approval, Obama gutted the work requirement for
welfare recipients passed by Congress and signed into law by President
            Bill Clinton.

In the bailout of General Motors and Chrysler, Obama illegally
shortchanged bond holders in favor of Labor Unions, despite U.S.
bankruptcy laws that specify that bond holders be first in line to be
            paid back.

Eager to use the killing of Osama bin Laden for political gain, Obama
exposed the identity and method of operation of the Navy SEALs team
that conducted the operation in Pakistan, thus exposing its members to a
lifetime of risk because they have been targeted for assassination by
Islamists. A short time after Obama exposed the Navy SEALs’ method of
operation, 22 SEALs were shot down and killed in Afghanistan. It is a
violation of law for the President or any American to reveal classified
            military secrets.

President Obama established an extra-constitutional top secret “kill
list” of people (including Americans) who can be summarily killed on
sight – presumably by drones — without due process. Once on Obama’s
kill list, an American citizen can be targeted and executed on the
opinion of a single government bureaucrat. That’s not how our legal
            system is supposed to work.

Obama Administration officials twisted the arms of defense
contractors to not issue layoff notices in October of 2012 so as to
avoid causing bad news for Obama right before the election — even though
federal law (the “WARN Act”) requires such notices. ; Not only is this a
violation of the WARN Act, it’s also an unlawful use of federal
            officials for campaign purposes.

President Obama intervened militarily in Libya in 2011 without the Congressional approval required by the War Powers Act.

Obama knowingly lied to Congress and the American people about the
killing of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans in
Benghazi, Libya. The President and his representatives repeatedly said
an anti-Islamic video sparked a spontaneous uprising in Libya that
resulted in the killings even though Obama knew that the attack was a
well-planned military-style assault by al Qaeda on the anniversary of
            September 11.

Michelle Obama’s family trip to Africa in June of 2011, including a
private safari at a South African game reserve, cost American taxpayers
$424,000 for air travel alone. Mrs. Obama brought along both her makeup
artist and hairstylist, as well as her mother, a niece and nephew, and
her daughters, who were listed as “senior staff members.”

You can sure concoct a whole load of total hogwash based on your biased reporting. The vast majority of it is nothing but cow manure and what’s even close to valid is tame compared to what the last 5 corrupt GOP presidents pulled off while in the White House. I haven’t read about thousands of people dying yet like what happened under Bush 2; nor even hundreds of Marines dying in a failed nefarious adventure under Reagan. Or a president so crooked Congress had to take away his authority to issue an executive order which required funding, And on and on. And there haven’t been over 100 of Obama’s administration indicted, brought to court and a number of them sent to prison for felonies like under Reagan either.

You’re whistling Dixie with your list of supposed underhanded dealings under Obama. He hasn’t done a thing that even comes close to the utterly corrupt actions that Nixon, Reagan and even Both Bushes pulled off!! Go pound sand somewhere you ab solute nitwit!!!!!

Years ago I used to listen to Rush quite a bit until I started checking up on stuff he was saying and realized he was doing nothing but turning every issue he could find into some form of hate mongering.

I’m sometimes forced to watch Fox News for stretches when I visit one of my daughters families and because I’m very much tuned into what’s going on in the world via efforts I make through at least some of the less partisan news outlets like NPR, USA Today and even the Washington Post – I become immediately aware that what I’m hearing, and often not hearing on Fox News are versions of stories that have been distorted to make Obama and the Democrats look bad at every opportunity while at the same time trying to make Republicans look good.

And Fox does that by not only turning the news it does broadcast into nothing more than propaganda, but in addition it actually censors the news it broadcasts either by deliberately not broadcasting news that would be positive to Obama, or by broadcasting it very quickly in time periods when it knows there are fewer viewers watching/listening.

And why would I waste my time watching Fox News when it’s been proven to lie at least 60% of the time:

‘Pants On Fire’: Analysis Shows 60% Of Fox News ‘Facts’ Are Really Lies

Fox News’ falsehoods gained particular notoriety in the wake of Islamic-extremist terrorist attacks in Europe earlier this year, when Fox began claiming that neighborhoods and even entire cities were off-limits to non-Muslims. Fans of Fox continue to repeat the claim, even though it’s been debunked by everyone fromlocal residents of these regions to British Prime Minister David Cameron. The controversy gave rise to the Twitter hashtag #foxnewsfacts, which is still popular today.

Then why don’t the gutless two faced retards impeach Obama, instead of just yapping on, and on about it? After all, if they’ve got the goods on him, and he’s such a lawless, lying crook? Or, just maybe it’s all just a barrel of hogwash, like Indy said? That in fact, they’ve got nothing to hang to any of these claims on at all. That they are all nothing more than a bag of hot air the Fox News, and Limbaugh listening yahoos down in good old Alabammy, love to hear squeezed? A sack of sheit they throw against the wall ever so often, to see if any of sticks? Then, go back and get another sack.

They don’t impeach him because they are gutless and two faced. Did Obama change the healthcare tax law or didn’t he? He is the executive branch of our government not the legislative and he has no authority to change laws. Did he or didn’t he trade 5 prisoners of war for one American traitor without giving congress notice as is required by law? A lot of people complain about FOX and Limbaugh when they don’t listen to either one.

Maybe they haven’t the case for impeachment they say they say do? Or maybe, since they have the votes in the House, they are considering the broader politics of such an action. As Clinton’s approval numbers gained 10 points. And the GOP lost seats in both chambers as a result. So clearly the public wants some real there, there. Like Watergate. Where a Special Prosecutor is going to file suit, and the President attempts to fire him. Secondly, do you know 100% of the ACA law? I don’t. Case in point: May the tax regimen under ACA, be changed, altered, or temporarily deferred, at the discretion of the Secretary of Health, and Human Services? To say address unforeseen technicalities, abnormalities, or facilitate implementation? Most laws have just such allowances. As none are written as to account for every possible contingency. You’ll
note, for the official record the opposition doesn’t actually say. How has prisoner exchanges been handled in the past? Has Congress always signed off on every exchange? If so, is that a requirement either by statute, regulation, or a law previously passed in Congress, that this President ignored? If so, why isn’t there at least been a formal protest of the violation by the Speaker? Note here that griping on Fox, or conservative talk radio, is not regarded as a formal remonstration. Pointing out said requirement, and the President’s willful violation of it. Starting to get the picture? Look, all presidents have a bevy of lawyers at their disposal. And every one of them excel in the area of the law as it relates to the power of the Executive Branch. So, Obama is not flying by the the seat of his pants here. Nor was George W. Bush. As his White House Council gave him cover to do all sorts of things, some thought were unconstitutional. Some actions he took as President. Others as the Commander and Chief, prosecuting a war. But all were using the wide latitude, and at times implied discretion the law provided his Office in such instances. To do as The Constitution requires. To protect the security of the Nation, and the Citizens within. The deal being, for years many have complained about the growing power of the President. And they are without fail, members of the Party who’s own member is not sitting in the Oval Office at the time they were making the complaints. And in this Barack Obama, nor is his opposition, different in this respect than any other.

My understanding on the prisoner exchange is the President is suppose to give Congress a 30 day notice of the perspective exchanges and he didn’t do that. The President cannot change any law. If a President could change tax laws, then the 1% would be paying at least 50% of their income. You can bet Obama would do at least that much. The President has veto power of any bill from Congress, but once a bill is enacted into law, only the Congress can make changes to it. Also, this President is not enforcing existing immigration laws. He took an oath to enforce our laws. Allowing any President of any political party to change laws can be the beginning of a very slope in the future. What if the next President decides he/she doesn’t like law protecting natural resources and just says from now on protecting the environment and tell the Attorney General to not prosecute companies polluting the environment. We just can’t have anybody or any group of individuals picking and choosing which laws they want to enforce.

He said there was no time to do such a thing. And as C&C it is his responsibility for the welfare of the troops. Now, who has formally challenged that perspective? Who has came forward and disproven, or disputed the timeline? As early as two weeks prior to Berghdahl’s negotiated release, Senators Graham, and McCain, a former POW himself, was imploring Obama to do all that was necessary to procure his release. As our only POW, says Mr. McCain, we really need to bring him home. So he did. They griped when Bergdahl was captive, and they griped when he was brought home. They also griped before he increased the troops in Afghanistan, because he hadn’t yet increased troops,
he was waffling. Now they gripe about the money being spent on the troops. While further griping about the plans for withdrawing them, because they say the troops should stay indefinitely. Plus, I think you you need to read the oath. It says “To the best of my ability.” President Obama makes the case, the immigration system is clogged, and unable to handle the full enforcement of existing law. So he is not refusing to enforce the law, simply prioritizing. He has asked Congress for more funds to hire more judges, and to build more holding facilities. So what has Congress done? Gripe.

What is their reasoning for all the flooding going on there now??? Recon God Is REALLY PISSED AT TEXAS!! And I say “No Federal $$$$ to Rebuild that hell hole!!”

Yeah, and FEMA is paying big time for the damage in Texas due to the floods. Guess it’s okay to fight FEMA from giving money to another state, but when Texas needs it….that’s a whole new ballgame!!! Hypocrites!
