Pence Lauds Convicted Arpaio As ‘Champion’ Of ‘Rule Of Law’

Reprinted with permission from Shareblue.com.

Criminally racist former Maricopa County sheriff Joe Arpaio already knew he had a friend in Trump. But Mike Pence is apparently a big — albeit confused — fan of his, too.

Speaking at a tax policy event in Tempe, Arizona, Pence was gleeful to have Arpaio in the room with him. And he not only called him a “favorite” — he gave the convicted criminal a specific shout-out for being a “champion” of the “rule of law.”

The cognitive dissonance of such a statement seemed to go unnoticed by Pence and the enthusiastic crowd.

“And I just found out when I was walking through the door that we were also going to be joined today by another favorite,” Pence declared. “A great friend of this president. A tireless champion of strong borders and the rule of law.”

Grinning at the applauding audience, Pence told Arpaio, “I’m honored to have you here.”

Even for this administration, praising an actual criminal for supporting the “rule of law” is baffling.

Arpaio is infamous for his utterly racist behavior and policies as sheriff before he was voted out in 2016. The most notorious examples include his now-shuttered Tent City — an open-air detention center where pre-trial inmates were subjected to horrific human rights abuses — and his abhorrent anti-immigration tactics such as using a volunteer “posse” to round up undocumented people and demand papers from anyone who looked too brown.

Arpaio refused to abide by a judge’s order that he cease such racial profiling, and he was found guilty of criminal contempt.

But perhaps seeing a kindred racist spirit in Arpaio, Trump pardoned him just a month later. And Arpaio himself thinks his repugnant history is a perfect resume for U.S. Senate.

Now, Pence has joined both men in their bizarre version of reality, where an actual convicted criminal is lauded for upholding the law. And where terrorizing innocent people is seen as a badge of patriotic honor.

For most people, Arpaio is Exhibit A in total disregard for proper systems of justice and basic human decency. For Trump and Pence, he’s a “favorite” who “exemplifies selfless public service.

Joe Arpaio Pushed His Senate Candidacy In Notorious Anti-Semitic Publication

Reprinted with permission from Media Matters.

Racist and disgraced former Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who is now running for the U.S. Senate as a Republican, recently gave an interview to a publication that’s pushed claims that the Holocaust is a “hoax” and 9/11 was a “Jewish” plot.

The American Free Press wrote in its January 29 & February 5 issue that Arpaio “spoke to AFP Jan. 21 in an exclusive interview about his recently announced bid” for Arizona’s Senate seat. During the interview with “roving editor” Mark Anderson, Arpaio promoted the viability of his candidacy and defended President Donald Trump’s agenda.

Civil rights groups have heavily criticized American Free Press over the years. The Anti-Defamation League described American Free Press as “an anti-Semitic conspiracy-oriented publication.” The Southern Poverty Law Center stated that the outlet is “racist and anti-Semitic.”

The late Willis Carto, an infamous anti-Semite and Holocaust denier, helped found the newspaper.

Media Matters has documented that American Free Press has repeatedly published blatantly false claims that the Holocaust is a “hoax” and other anti-Semitic content (the site scrubbed some of its posts about the Holocaust following Media Matters criticism). Headlines on the site have included:

The site’s bookstore has sold The Holocaust Never Happened & The CIA Killed JFK, a book that claims to “destroy the hoax of the 6 million Jewish victims of Nazi Germany,” and another book that claims, “The official narrative of the Holocaust cannot be sustained.”

Arpaio has repeatedly given interviews to American Free Press, including when Trump pardoned him last year after Arpaio was convicted of criminal contempt of court for deliberately violating a judge’s order regarding his racial profiling of the Latino community.

CNN’s Andrew Kaczynski and Chris Massie reported last week that Rep. Lou Barletta (R-PA), who is also running for Senate, gave an interview to American Free Press in 2006. Mark Anderson conducted that interview as well.

Jon Feere, a senior advisor at Immigration and Customs Enforcement, also gave an interview to American Free Press when he was a legal policy analyst for the Center for Immigration Studies.

In addition to courting Holocaust-denying publications, the anti-immigrant Arpaio has a long history of racist and corrupt actions.

#EndorseThis: See Why John Oliver Deserves That Emmy

Dismaying as it was to watch former presidential press secretary Sean Spicer treated like a cute celebrity on the Emmy Awards, the television academy at least recognized many of the brightest stars gracing the tube — including the mighty John Oliver, who won “Writing for a Variety Series” in competition with host Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, and Samantha Bee.

To honor Oliver, spend a few minutes admiring his recent takedown of Joe Arpaio, thuggish beneficiary of a Trump pardon, which showcases the remarkable research and sly humor that are the hallmarks of Last Week Tonight. (This episode includes an excruciating clip of the former Maricopa County sheriff croaking Sinatra’s “My Way,” setting up a gag.)

Congratulations, John!

How Bad Is Joe Arpaio? You Probably Have No Idea, But Trevor Noah Knows

The presidential pardon of former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio revealed more than Trump’s contempt for courts and the law, which was not exactly a secret anyway. Defending his decision to relieve the lawless lawman of the penalty for defying a federal court order, Trump endorsed his execrable, bigoted, extremely costly record in office.

Just how bad was Arpaio, often dubbed the “worst sheriff in America”? You probably have no idea. But Trevor Noah knows the stunning details. And he tells all in this latest edition of “Profiles in Tremendousness” — including the message Trump is sending to all of his cronies.
