Obama Rejects Canada-to-U.S Keystone XL Pipeline

By Jeff Mason and Timothy Gardner

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday rejected the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada in a victory for environmentalists who have campaigned against the project for more than seven years.

“The pipeline would not make a meaningful long-term contribution to our economy,” Obama told a press conference. He said the pipeline would not reduce gasoline prices for drivers, and shipping “dirtier” crude from Canada would not increase U.S. energy security.

The denial of TransCanada Corp’s more than 800,000 barrels per day project will make it more difficult for producers to develop the province of Alberta’s oil sands. It could also put the United States in a stronger position for global climate talks in Paris that start late this month in which countries will aim to reach a deal to slow global warming.

Keystone XL would have linked existing pipeline networks in Canada and the United States to bring crude from Alberta and also some from North Dakota to refineries in Illinois and, eventually, the Gulf of Mexico coast.

TransCanada first sought the required presidential permit for the cross-border section in 2008 but the proposal inspired a wave of environmental activism that turned Keystone XL into a rallying cry to fight climate change. Blocking Keystone became a litmus test of the green movement’s ability to hinder fossil fuel extraction in Canada’s oil sands.

“This is a big win,” said Bill McKibben, the co-founder of 350.org, an environmental group. “President Obama’s decision to reject Keystone XL because of its impact on the climate is nothing short of historic, and sets an important precedent that should send shockwaves through the fossil fuel industry.”

TransCanada and other oil companies said the pipeline would have strengthened North American energy security, created thousands of construction jobs and helped to relieve a glut of oil in the country’s heartland.

But since 2008 the United States has experienced a drilling boom boosting oil production 80 percent and contributing to a slump in domestic oil prices from above $100 a barrel to about $44.

I was referring to the Republicans (you brought them up).
As for Sanders, I like him and his positions very much (much more than Clinton), but those who support him should
          1) Remember George McGovern, who I also liked.
          2) Remember how stupid Americans are about Socialism.
If Bernie wins the nomination, I’ll vote for him, but I think the GOP lie machine will use public ignorance to crucify him, and should he be elected, he’s likely to get zero cooperation from Congressional GOP, and little to none from Dems.

Yeah because people with ni record of accomplishment and 50 year histories of lying make great leaders right ?

50-year history of lying? Yeah, I just bet you can back that up with actual facts, as opposed to the ravings of lunatic right-wing sites. Speaking of accomplishments, looks to me like she’s pretty far ahead of you, despite being the target of multiple outstandingly vicious and dishonest smear campaigns and the incredible level of irrational hatred of many insecure males and ill-informed or submissive females.
Very few leaders – “great” or otherwise – could meet the standards of honesty and overall saintliness the GOP demands of OPPOSITION candidates, while cheering for morons, pathological liars, criminals, and just plain ignorant and malicious heels within its own ranks. I believe you referred to the last president as a “gentleman,” if I recall properly, yet I would say he never made an honest statement about anything of importance during either his campaign or his presidency (and got a LOT of people killed, injured, or screwed by lying), and this seemed to be sensed by a lot of Republicans as well, but now that the party has gone insane again after a short remission, he’s coming back. Don’t whine to me about Hillary’s alleged lies or lack of accomplishments.

She has no accomplishments only a teack record of failure. Today I read how Hillary lied and asserted she was going to join the Marines years ago . How about Chelsea was jogging by the World Trade Center when the Planes hit ..How about how she took Sniper fire at that airport where she was actually met by Flower Girls ..So many .How about a You Tube video causes Benghazi . I love strong intelligent women and so do all Conservative men I know …That is because unlike Liberal men we still produce testosterone . So no you are dead wrong …A bonus for us Red Blooded men is that Conservative Women tend to be Smart and Hot ..Think Michele Malkin . Meanwhile you get Rosie and Joy . I don’t know too many Submissive Conservative Women unless you are referring to the bedroom and that is their kink ..Most Conservative are self sufficient because they are educated and work . And I’m sorry we don’t have liars and criminals running . We have no candidate under FBI investigation and if we did no o ne would support him ..You do have that and your people will support her ..So it would be nice of you and smart to not try that Talking Point

I have no doubt you read all of this. The question is, where did you read it? More lies on the internet that any politician tells. And the items you cite – in addition to being highly unlikely in most cases (the “sniper fire” appears to be true) – vie with one another in triviality. I don’t care to debate biology other than to say that – as with many of the conservatives who cry loudest against gays being gays themselves – people who brag about their masculinity and attempt to convey the idea that they are macho tend to be insecure, and people who make foreign policy decisions based on those insecurities, or even on real testosterone are just plain fools. I’m sure Hillary and Bill together haven’t told as many lies in their lives as George W Bush did during his campaign and time as president, and Bush’s lies GOT PEOPLE KILLED, and I’m equally sure that Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, and the whole lot of the GOP presidential candidates could rival just about any other group of con men of the same size you could get together. And don’t mention Benghazi again: I’m sick to death of the GOP lies and unethical and expensive “investigations” intended to exploit a tragedy for political gain, and I never ceased to be amazed that someone who seemed as intelligent as you could fall for that crap. As I said several times before, you obviously hold candidates who oppose your ideas to an incredibly higher ethical standard than you do the bums you support, besides which, I never said Hillary was a saint. All I said is the GOP candidates make her look like a blessing descended from heaven, so I’ll hold my nose and vote for her to avoid getting one of them.
I see no reason to continue the pointless argument.

Pure BS. They had plans to attack Iraq before they even got in office. Any Dems who voted for it were in my opinion naive, but they should be able to trust the president on such matters.
Your objections to the Iran are simple crap, mostly from the GOP lie machine.

            NO MORE.

That’s a hoot.. So Bush who hadn’t started a conflict until after we attacked was planning all along and well before 9 / 11 to attack Iraq ???? Who writes your stuff Hillary ? And what are you referring to as my objections to Iran ? Are you talking about the Iran Surrender deal or something else because if you are talking about the Surrender deal and you can’t find a single thing that benefits us in that deal you should oppose it to right ??? So tell me one good thing in it for us . I won’t hold my breath because there is nothing in it that benefits us period .

And I’ll add, what are YOUR accomplishments by which you judge Clinton to have none, any relevant accomplishments by any of the morons you support aside from Ben Carson’s skill as a surgeon. Think about it; as I said before, this conversation is pointless.

    Thank you President Obama!
He said he would resolve this before he left office and it’s especially fitting that he did so when asked to shelve the decision, as they hoped the next president would approve it.
One can tell by the degree of wailing from the mouth breathing right and the false narratives they create to minimize the importance.
    This one is a BFD.

Since the good citizens of Canada rejected that pipeline from going through their pristine country, it’s fitting that President Obama rejected this. No more dirty crude oil passing through our pipelines and destroying Native American Indians’ land. Has anyone noticed the number of spills in the past year alone from our own poorly maintained pipelines? Thank you President Obama.

Pipelines are safer than shipping oil by rail.

Pipelines have proven much much safer than Warren Buffets trains ..They also don’t pollute as they move that oil . They don’t derail like Warren Buffets trains either,…You do realize this had nothi by to do with the environment and Obama only did it to protect Warren Buffets train empire right ? He donates a lot of money to Democrats to game that advantage . Now pleae e dont whine when we still have to import oil from the Middle East K

Let’s face it .Obama only killed the Keystone Pipeline to protect Warren Buffets train empire . That oils is still going to move across our Country only by heavy polluting diesel trains that crash and burn …But hey he donates to Democrats right ? …So screw the environment and Global Warming er Climate Changey or something or whatever Liberals are being told to call it today .
