Bill Kristol Urges GOP Officials To Save Their Party — By Endorsing Biden

What Republicans say about President Donald Trump publicly and what they say about him behind closed doors can be two very different things. Many prominent GOP senators and governors are reluctant to criticize him publicly, but that doesn't mean they aren't privately worried when they see his collapsing poll numbers — and conservative journalist Bill Kristol, in an article for The Bulwark, makes a plea to such Republicans: Have the courage to openly reject Trumpism.

"My appeal is simple," Kristol writes. "It's directed to those who have not been opponents of Donald Trump. It's directed to those who, for whatever mixtures of reasons and motives, have until now reluctantly supported or tolerated him…. It is to become former Trump supporters."

#EndorseThis: America Must Hold Fox (And Murdoch) Accountable

Sorry but funny isn’t really happening today, as we honor the victims of the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre — and wonder how our country fell into this perilous pit of hatred.

Even amid mourning and remembrance, we hear a chorus of calls for accountability not just from Trump himself but also from Fox News, the loudest media bullhorn for Trumpism. As Rupert Murdoch’s network triples down on the conspiracies and bigotries that fuel the Trump version of “conservatism,” many voices have begun to demand an advertiser boycott. Even Republicans like Joe Scarborough and Bill Kristol, the neoconservative who appeared on Fox News Sunday for years, are wondering how Murdoch and the Fox board can stomach their toxic role in our culture.

To anyone who has followed Murdoch’s career closely, all the way back to the race-baiting headlines he ran in the 1980s New York Post, such questions sound naïve. But yes, the Murdoch propaganda operation needs to be held to account for its daily violations of civil decency — now.

#EndorseThis: Incredulous Conservatives Denounce GOP Obamacare Repeal

In the days since the GOP announced its plan to repeal and replace Obamacare, the bill has faced searing criticism from Democrats and even some conservatives who disapprove of “Obamacare Lite.”

On MSNBC’s Morning Joe, neoconservative pundit Bill Kristol berated the Republican Party for rushing through an unpopular bill that has already faced brutal condemnation from the American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Osteopathic Association. Kristol can’t understand why the Trump team tossed out the “Politics 101” playbook.

“They are so intoxicated with the notion that Trump’s going to bless it,” a stunned Kristol exclaimed. “[Like] Trump has this magic potion that he just slaps on something and it goes sailing through.”

At the end of the segment, Kristol predicted that the GOP bill is “going to fall apart and there will not be a vote.” Of course he makes all sorts of predictions that never pan out, most notoriously about the invasion of Iraq. But is he right this time?

No, You’ve Never Heard Of The New #NeverTrump Candidate

No, You’ve Never Heard Of The New #NeverTrump Candidate

In what is rumored to be an inside leak, Bloomberg revealed Tuesday that David French is the elusive conservative that #NeverTrump movement leader and Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol wants as a third-party bid to defeat Donald Trump. Kristol later confirmed to CNN that French was the chosen one.

French has not yet confirmed he is up for the challenge.

French is so unknown, even to media insiders, that when the news broke, TV stations were stuck with a handful of file photos they could find of him as they discussed his possible candidacy.

So who is David French, and does he stand any shot at all of being a noticeable presence in this election?

French is a Harvard-trained constitutional lawyer and a staff writer for the National Review, where he has strongly criticized Trump’s candidacy. “It is certain that he is dishonest, ignorant of foreign and domestic affairs and deals in the most vicious personal attacks,” French wrote of Trump last week.

What’s especially surprising about the choice of French to represent the #NeverTrump movement is how unaware he was of his potential role just a week ago: In another piece last week, French encouraged Mitt Romney to run as an independent candidate, calling him “the only man who combines the integrity, financial resources, name recognition, and broad public support to make a realistic independent run at the presidency.”

Romney now seems to be open to supporting French, tweeting “I know David French to be an honorable, intelligent and patriotic person. I look forward to following what he has to say.”

French’s wife, Nancy French, ghostwrote Bristol Palin’s Not Afraid Of Life. David and Nancy French co-wrote the book Home and Away, in which they talk about their marriage and the rules they followed while he was in Iraq. Their strict rules included banning Nancy from engaging in phone conversations with men, “meaningful e-mail exchanges,” and using Facebook — in order to stay away from “the ghosts of boyfriend’s past.”

Like everyone else in the conservative blogosphere, French has made a sport of contemplating alternates to voting for Trump. An article published May 5 asks, “Is the Libertarian Party’s Gary Johnson a Plausible Alternative to Trump and Clinton?”

Yes, he is, French concluded. He advised Johnson: “You won’t win, but you can matter. This is your moment.”
