WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The CIA has concluded that Russia intervened in the 2016 election to help President-elect Donald Trump win the White House, and not just to undermine confidence in the U.S. electoral system, a senior U.S. official said on Friday.

U.S. intelligence agencies have assessed that as the 2016 presidential campaign drew on, Russian government officials devoted increasing attention to assisting Donald Trump’s effort to win the election, the U.S. official familiar with the finding told Reuters on Friday night on condition of anonymity.

Citing U.S. officials briefed on the matter, the Washington Post reported on Friday that intelligence agencies had identified individuals with connections to the Russian government who provided thousands of hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee and others, including the chairman of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, to WikiLeaks.

U.S. President Barack Obama ordered intelligence agencies to review cyber attacks and foreign intervention into the 2016 election and deliver a report before he leaves office on Jan. 20, the White House said on Friday.

Obama’s homeland security adviser, Lisa Monaco, told reporters the report’s results would be shared with lawmakers and others.

“The president has directed the intelligence community to conduct a full review of what happened during the 2016 election process … and to capture lessons learned from that and to report to a range of stakeholders, to include the Congress,” she said during an event hosted by the Christian Science Monitor.

As summer turned to fall, Russian hackers turned almost all their attention to the Democrats. Virtually all the emails they released publicly were potentially damaging to Clinton and the Democrats, the official told Reuters.

“That was a major clue to their intent,” the official said. “If all they wanted to do was discredit our political system, why publicize the failings of just one party, especially when you have a target like Trump?”

A second official familiar with the report said the intelligence analysts’ conclusion about Russia’s motives does not mean the intelligence community believes that Moscow’s efforts altered or significantly affected the outcome of the election.

Russian officials have denied all accusations of interference in the U.S. election.

A CIA spokeswoman said the agency had no comment on the matter.

The hacked emails passed to WikiLeaks were a regular source of embarrassment to the Clinton campaign during the race for the presidency.

U.S. intelligence analysts have assessed “with high confidence” that at some point in the extended presidential campaign Russian President Vladimir Putin’s government had decided to try to bolster Trump’s chances of winning.

The Russians appear to have concluded that Trump had a shot at winning and that he would be much friendlier to Russia than Clinton would be, especially on issues such as maintaining economic sanctions and imposing additional ones, the official said.

Moscow is launching a similar effort to influence the next German election, following an escalating campaign to promote far-right and nationalist political parties and individuals in Europe that began more than a decade ago, the official said.

In both cases, said the official, Putin’s campaigns in both Europe and the United States are intended to disrupt and discredit the Western concept of democracy by promoting extremist candidates, parties, and political figures.

In October, the U.S. government formally accused Russia of a campaign of cyber attacks against Democratic Party organizations ahead of the Nov. 8 presidential election. Obama has said he warned Putin about consequences for the attacks.

Trump has said he is not convinced Russia was behind the cyber attacks. His transition team issued a statement on “claims of foreign interference in U.S. elections” on Friday but did not directly address the issue.

“I don’t believe they interfered,” Trump told Time magazine about Russia in an interview published this week. “That became a laughing point, not a talking point, a laughing point. Any time I do something, they say, ‘Oh, Russia interfered.'”

But,,but.. why would the Russians want to see Trump elected President? Only to have America made greater, or great again? Unless, Putin smells a con. And sees millions of Americans falling for a know nothing self promoting narcissist. Relative babes in the woods the old KGB head eats for breakfast along with his kolbasa and black tea.

  2. Let this be a testament to the decadence and depravity displayed throughout this election season, and a testament to a godless obsession which Russia and other state-sponsored entities have fallen prey to in this fitful period in humankind’s evolution into The Age of Maturity.
A darker cloud now hangs over Trump, darker than the one following him over these past decades, and will loom over his head and his Administration into perpetuity.

Yes, Donald—you won, but your victory is forever marred, comes at a heavy price, and is tainted beyond repair. Don’t forget to thank Vladimir in person, or by Twitter if you’re so inclined.

“Trump is the President—The People(?), and Russia, have spoken!”

    • GODBlessRealAmerica says:

Wrong again the American people elected Trump and you liberal idiots arestill crying, protesting hahahahahha

      • Forever fawning over Trump. This man-love thing you have for Trump was an abomination to start with and it has gotten real stale.
But carry on, but I doubt if wife #3 will be happy with you standing outside their suite trying to get a date with Donald.

  3. On another note, we should just take a deep breath and reevaluate the state of mind and the soul of America, Russia, Syria, Iran, China, and across the rest of the planet.
As might be evident by most, given the racism, the aggressive nature of nations to exert themselves and extend their spheres of influence, the breakdown of political institutions across the world, the assault on the rights of women in every quarter of the planet, this breakdown boils down to a loss of a collective conscience on the part of nations and a dismissal of spiritual and moral values prevalent among most humans.
The following underscores the failure of current Religious institutions to stem this tide, yet shows that Religion, absent the corrupting influence of the sacerdotal order, and unimpeded by charlatans pretending to speak with the voice of God, can reverse this process:

“Writing of religion as a social force, Bahá’u’lláh said: “Religion is the greatest of all means for the establishment of order in the world and for the peaceful contentment of all that dwell therein.” Referring to the eclipse or corruption of religion, he wrote: “Should the lamp of religion be obscured, chaos and confusion will ensue, and the lights of fairness, of justice, of tranquillity and peace cease to shine.” In an enumeration of such consequences the Bahá’í writings point out that the “perversion of human nature, the degradation of human conduct, the corruption and dissolution of human institutions, reveal themselves, under such circumstances, in their worst and most revolting aspects. Human character is debased, confidence is shaken, the nerves of discipline are relaxed, the voice of human conscience is stilled, the sense of decency and shame is obscured, conceptions of duty, of solidarity, of reciprocity and loyalty are distorted, and the very feeling of peacefulness, of joy and of hope is gradually extinguished.”

    Just something to consider.

Brought to you by the same government intelligent services that said Iraq had WMD’s. Merry Christmas!

I hope to see nothing other than this discussed on Sunday morning TV tomorrow. To do otherwise would be a disservice to the America people. Of course, the Trump pie holes will say that this is a tempest in a teacup, but if the USSR had done this during the Cold War, Republicans would have been screaming TREASON from rooftops all over the USA.

And, Electoral College voters, pay serous attention to this. Do you want to elect a Russian puppet as President of the United States? Is there not at least some doubt in your mind about whether the Nov. 8 election was legitimate, given the CIA’s revelation of Russian hacking? You have a choice to make. Either elect a totally incompetent, bumbling tweeter who is controlled by Russian creditors and enemies intent on taking through the American electoral process what they could not diplomatically or militarily, or vote for an experienced foreign policy veteran who knows government inside out and can handle the attacks by a determined, cunning, and malevolent foe. You can take Trump, elected by racist, know-nothing voters, or you can take Clinton, the popular choice in spite of the efforts of Putin and his henchmen to steal the Presidency to use for world conquest. Make your choice. You alone are now in control of this election, and what you do on Dec. 19, 2016, will determine the course of U.S. and world history, possibly for the next century or more. DO THE RIGHT THING! The world will thank you for it.

      • TZToronto says:

Laugh’s on you! I moved to Toronto years ago. So I don’t have to decide whether to endure the next four years of misery under the Trump regime or try to get into Canada. I’m already here, covered by universal health care and living under a Liberal government. Yippee!!

      • Thomas Martin says:

Who is brainwashed, you believe false news, conspiracy theories and lastly, believe the garbage you hear from your favorite 1%er, Trump, who is about to stomp on every middle class and poor person in America. Enjoy the soap opera. Maybe he will twitter his thanks to you as he takes away your Social Security and allows Wall Street to join his fascist government (which they already have).

      • Budjob says:

There is a battle of wits between you ,and me,and I never assault an unarmed individual!

    • Mama Bear says:

You are right, TZ, these electors have an enormous responsibility to think this through. I can’t help but wonder what would happen if they elect Clinton. Either way I think there is going to be nothing but trouble ahead.

  6. butterbean says:

Now we know why Trump does not want or need any security briefings, he is briefed by the commies in Russia.
The commies got Trump elected, why trust the CIA. Once you go commie you lust for yo mommy…or your daughter. Trump is the twitter crybaby. Who needs a Democracy when Trump can be the dick-tater and be supported by communist Russia.

  7. itsfun says:

Remember when Trump expressed concerns about hacking the election process and the FBI, CIA and Justice Department said that was impossible? Now that the “chosen one” has lost the election, we are reading about how the election process was hacked. Talk about poor losers. This bullsh_t won’t work for anyone except losers.

    • Marilyn says:

It wasn’t the election that was hacked. Trump had said that the election was rigged. The CIA findings relate to the hacking of email accounts and the release of those during the campaign that perhaps influenced public opinion leading up to the election. There is a huge difference. Since state and local authorities control the election procedures in their respective locales, it would be much more difficult to rig a presidential election.

      • itsfun says:

I know the states and local authorities control election procedures, my liberal sister works the elections. I know the election was not hacked, but have heard liberals say Russia had a huge impact on our election results. Did you know that President-elect Trump has never met Putin? We have people on this site saying the President-elect is a Russian puppet and gets his orders from Putin. This kind of BS hurts the credibility of our election process.

        • Thomas Martin says:

Ignorant Americans read false news (and believe it) which was spread by lunatics because they know how gullible many in our electorate are and enjoyed the outcome. Information was hacked from both the Democratic and Republican headquarters and other political sources and provided to wikileaks which of course is taken as the gospel by many. The soap opera will be fun and sad to watch.

        • johninPCFL says:

Manafort and Tillerman were the conduits between Putin and Agent Orange. The puppet has already broadcast his intention to leave Europe on their own facing Russia.

        • jmprint says:

The Russians have admitted to as much as communicating with someone in the Trump’s regime. Where is Assange and more leaks, why don’t they matter anymore.

          • itsfun says:

I said President-elect Trump has never met Putin. I didn’t say anything about anybody else. When a Russian say they didn’t interfere with the election, you call them a liar. When you hear a Russian say something you like then you believe them. Which is it with you? No wonder you are a progressive you pick and choose what to believe depending on your own feelings.

          • Budjob says:

He IS NOT my dictator,he is Putin’s puppet!

          • itsfun says:

He is going to be your President on Jan. 20. President Trump get use to it.

          • jmprint says:

Unless you are with Trump every minute of his time, you cannot say that and expect it to be the truth, just because Trump says it is. I have never heard a Russian admit they did or did not interfere, where do you get that. The obvious doesn’t need to be repeated. Like I tell you you are so up Trumps A$$ you can’t see or hear straight.

          • itsfun says:

Because you haven’t heard something, you say it doesn’t exist. Talk about having a ego. Tell me; what does Hillary’s ass taste like? That is where your head is.

          • jmprint says:

No, I do know the interference exist, it’s you that’s in denial. If you are curious about how Hillary taste, look her up. I am not up her ass, you don’t see me trying to debunk what comes out of her mouth that is not already proven to be debunked, that is what you do with trump, try to twist the truth into a lie, that only works with Trumpters.

          • itsfun says:

You have been making excuses for crooked Hillary for months. You say her lies are only white lies and don’t mean anything. You are blind to her corruption. She lost get use to it.

          • jmprint says:

Like I said you don’t see me trying to debunk what comes out of her mouth that is not already proven to be debunked. Not blind to her corruption, blind to fake news. Pizzeria anyone!

    • Budjob says:

I talked to your Momma yesterday,an,she told me they were waiting for a letter from the condom factory in place of your birth certidficate!

  8. Dan S says:

I think it’s time that the United States display our flag upside down ???????? We are a nation in crisis and will not have any leadership once President Obama leaves office. Trump is not going to be a legitimate President but a puppet of Russia. This fool is refusing to attend intelligence briefings which right there shows he’s not serious about taking this job seriously. To those on the right this is not sour grapes because a Democrat didn’t win. This is about competency & leadership which Trump doesn’t possess. Even his appointments to his cabinet are horrible choices & I fear that our national security is in trouble. We’ll in all likelihood see an attack on America much worse than 911 under this regime. God help us all ????

  9. woodrose says:

The CIA has no comment, yet I’m supposed to believe anonymous unnamed officials said that they were told something by the CIA, written in a newspaper owned by Jeff Bezos, regurgitated by Reuters.

NO. Mainstream media and the Washington Establishment have to do better.

What is REALLY going on? Why is there this fight between FBI/Trump and CIA/Clinton? Why should we believe either side? Why are the FBI and CIA taking sides in an election in the first place?

  10. Thoughtopsy says:

Wikileaks has lost any respect or ethics it once had.
Assange used the information it was given to become a political player. He held press conferences, and chose the timing and content in his releases to maximise impact on the election.

He is now as corrupt as the people he reports on.

How many people will now leak things to an entity that has shown it will selectively choose when and what to release to benefit it’s own political agenda?

Julian, you’ve ruined your own creation, you idiot.
