WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Donald Trump on Tuesday abruptly fired FBI Director James Comey in the fallout over Comey’s probe of Democrat Hillary Clinton’s emails last year, saying Comey was no longer able to effectively lead the law enforcement agency.

Comey had been leading an FBI investigation into allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and possible collusion with Trump’s campaign. His dismissal will likely fuel concerns about the integrity of the probe and renew calls for an independent investigation.

The FBI director had been embroiled in a controversy surrounding his probe into whether Clinton’s use of a private email server while U.S. secretary of state during President Barack Obama’s first term compromised national security.

“It is essential that we find new leadership for the FBI that restores public trust and confidence in its vital law enforcement mission,” Trump said in a letter to Comey released by the White House.

Trump told Comey in the letter he accepted the recommendation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions that he could no longer provide effective leadership. Comey’s term was to run through September 2023.

The decision, announced by White House press secretary Sean Spicer in a brief appearance before reporters, caught Washington off guard.

Comey had said in July the Clinton email case should be closed without prosecution, but then declared – 11 days before the Nov. 8 election in which Clinton was the Democratic nominee – that he had reopened the investigation because of a discovery of a new trove of Clinton-related emails.

Clinton and other Democrats say they believe Comey’s decision help cost her the election.

The White House released a memo by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein that provided the administration’s justification for firing Comey.

“I cannot defend the Director’s handling of the conclusion of the investigation of Secretary Clinton’s emails, and I do not understand his refusal to accept the nearly universal judgment that he was mistaken,” Rosenstein wrote.

Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin went to the Senate floor on Tuesday to urge the White House to clarify whether the FBI investigation of Russian interference in the presidential campaign would continue now that Comey has been fired.

“Any attempt to stop or undermine this FBI investigation would raise grave constitutional issues,” Durbin said. “We await clarification by the White House as soon as possible as to whether this investigation will continue.”

Trump, in his letter to Comey, said: “While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the judgment of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the bureau.”

There are several Russia probes ongoing in Congress. The U.S House of Representatives’ main investigation has been stymied in recent weeks by partisan squabbles, while the Senate’s parallel probe has been slow-moving and equipped with a much smaller staff than previous high-profile congressional investigations.

  1. 1) “….saying Comey was no longer able to effectively lead the law enforcement agency.”
    2) Trump told Comey in the letter he accepted the recommendation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions that he could no longer provide effective leadership. Comey’s term was to run through September 2023.

Item “1” is true, but the intent is based on some eternal “Darwinian” battle being waged by Trump to dominate others and avoid the dangers he set before him in advance by his Karma. Donald foresaw this particularly trick-bag of his own making he’s about to enter, and felt it prudent to get Comey off the scent connecting Trump to Putin, by firing him.

Item “2” is a howler, for the simple reason that Donald has no business, or leg to stand on, to talk about anyone else not being able to “provide effective leadership”. Of all the gall!

Comey will now feel more than “mildly nauseated” about his inept bumbling in the past. This firing will be a stain that will affect him in more ways than the shame of being told “You’re Fired For Incompetency!”, as well as having to ponder for the rest of his life putting “his finger on the scale” of the Election process in 2016.

In the end, both Trump and Comey are victims of their own lusts for leadership and influence. Trump’s big day is coming, in one way or another.

Its a good thing it was Mr President Trump that fired Comey instead of Hillary for he would have been found dead on a sidewalk some cold morning. That’s how the Clintons do things.

Yeah man! Don’t let the fact that that moronic conspiracy theory was totally and exhaustively debunked decades ago stop you from spreading it! It’s OK to lie if you don’t like someone!

    • Eleanore Whitaker says:

Can you prove what you posted? That isn’t how the Clintons do it moron! It’s how Putin does it. He poisoned Nemtsov 2 times with radioactive material. Don’t bother to deny it. Nemtsov would make an ass of your denials. So would the other 34 dissenters and journalists, one shot dead on a Moscow street by Putin thugs.

The Clintons are not the ones who are guilty. Your Boy Trump is. So tell us rightie boy did your Mommy and Daddy teach you that being a world class liar is your goal? Why exactly do you insist Trump is innocent when we now the only reason he fired Comey was because Clapper testified under oath there WAS an FBI counter intelligence investigation into Trump and his campaign aides connections to Russia.

We have a few pockets of isolated rural areas where those who hate the guv’mint hold their hands out for their farm subsidies.

        • Eleanore Whitaker says:

You know that Bedminster combo mansion and golf course here in NJ? Did you know that Lard Ass in Chief bought 4 goats so he could avoid paying taxes on that huge property?

He files every year for a farm tax subsidy.

If you notice, every one of the homes he owns, be it Trump Tower or Mar-a-Lago are all homes and businesses combined.

Why? Because he gets to live tax free as a homeowner and only pays the taxes on the rents he collects for Trump Tower from his renters or the profits he makes from his Mar-A-Lago resort in FL where they pay $200,000 for membership.

But, now..WE the taxpayers are paying the cost of him using all 3 as his presidential White Houses.

How you can possibly not be concerned when the Russian ambassador JOKES about Comey’s firing, that Trump has fired three people involved in the Russian investigation, that he needed to “deliberate” about Flynn’s firing (hench the 3 week delay), that he has been entirely inconsistent in policy, but consistent in his actions that are soley good for Trump ….at best you are completely intellectually dishonest.

His type of stupidity is dangerous to democracy. They aren’t smart enough to point out anything to. I blocked him.

      • Johnny five says:

Not concern what so ever . Hillary lost! We the American people did not want her. Get over it !!! Cry baby’s.

    • idamag says:

Why it it, you stupid uninformed ideologue racists cannot resist your hate and lies. I am blocking you as you are too stupid to converse with. George Washington was worried about letting the backcountry yoemen vote as they would destroy democracy. Ignorance is not a virtue. It is a danger to the country.

Why doesn’t the senate simply cut to the chase and subpoena all of Trumps income tax filings? Trump has been dancing around publicizing his tax returns ad nauseum by claiming that they are under audit.
He promised(another one of many that he has broken) that he would make his taxes public if he were elected. The IRS has clearly and often said that he can make public his returns anytime even if they are under audit.
The man is a pathological liar. He he needs to be held accountable….NOW…before he screws this country up any worse than he already has.
I believe Trump is finding out that it’s a lot hotter in the kitchen than he thought it would be and he can’t simply snap his fingers and make it all go away. He’s his own, and our country’s, worst enemy….evidently with the aid of his buddy, Putin.
If he reads this(I know he won’t), he’ll thank me for telling him so.

  5. idamag says:

Now trump can appoint Eric Trump to head the FBI,
