A ‘Jobless Recovery’ On Earth, And The Future Of Workers On Mars

Happy Labor Day!

And what better time than this annual celebration of America’s working stiffs to draw attention to our national economic recovery?

As those attached to the Dow Jones Average can attest, the economy is now perking along quite nicely, with the Dow up 57 percent since the dark days of 2009, presently soaring above 13,000. Also, the nation’s pile of wealth has grown impressively, executive paychecks have zoomed back up to Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah levels, and sales at stores like Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue are absolutely crackerjack!

The only little cloud over this otherwise sunshiny recovery is … well, you. You people for whom Labor Day is named, that is.

Not only did Wall Street’s crash knock jobs, wages, benefits, homeownership and middle-class opportunities into the ditch, but they’re still stuck there — and even sinking lower. Yet the financial elites, political establishment and media powers remain rapturously focused on the Dow, uncaring about the precipitous decline in the Doug Jones Average.

If Doug and Donna aren’t prospering, neither is America, no matter how much wealth the privileged few are lavishing on luxury goods or socking away in offshore tax havens.

The stark status of the Doug was dramatically highlighted in an Aug. 24 report from the Labor Department on laid-off workers. Of the 6.1 million Americans who lost stable jobs since 2009, when the “recovery” officially began, nearly half are still out of work.

Also, more than half of those who did find jobs took big hits in pay, thus whacking their families’ standard of living and holding back the economy’s critically needed revival of consumer spending.

Those who’ve been knocked down are mostly not low-skilled poor people, but middle-class folks like Andrew McMenemy, whose software firm pulled the plug on his $80,000-a-year high-tech job in 2010. He has finally found another job, but it pays under $20,000 a year, with no benefits. At 53 years of age, McMenemy has had to move in with his father.

Knocking down the middle class is economically stupid, socially dangerous and morally wrong. The fact is that today’s corporate and political leaders are wretchedly bad gardeners — by tending to the moneyed few and ignoring America’s workaday majority, they’re watering the weeds and pulling the flowers.

Where’s that going to lead us? Don’t look now, but according to a slew of corporate executives, government policy-makers and media cheerleaders, our future is on Mars. Not that we have to move there, but we’re told we can see the future in NASA’s lovable Mars rover, named “Curiosity.” It’s presently scooting around the red planet with human-like dexterity and abilities.

  • Part of our problems emanate from the fact that when our government and industry decided to outsource manufacturing to maximize profits and expand our global interests on the false premise that a service oriented economy was enough to sustain our needs back in the 1970s they ignored the possibility that many of those service jobs were also going to be outsourced for the same reason they moved much of our assembly line work out of the USA. One of the most revealing decisions on this issue was the GOP rejecting President Obama’s proposal to punish companies that outsource jobs and reward those that invest and create jobs at home. There is no question where their priorities and loyalties are, and it ain’t us.

You speak like these are mistakes only from our past?? On 9/13/2011 Diane Sawyer of ABC News reported that the Obama administration allowed a CHINESE FIRM, and CHINESE WORKERS to build three massive construction projects here in the US instead of US firms & workers…the Alexander Hamilton Bridge project (NY) $400 MILLION to CHINA: Oakland to San Francisco Bridge at 7.2 BILLION to THE CHINESE: and a large project in Alaska at 90 MILLION…for a TOTAL LOSS TO US WORKERS OF ALMOST 8 BILLION DOLLARS??? All of it went to China & IMPORTED Chinese WORKERS????? Where was Obama on these projects and the loss to the USA of ALMOST EIGHT BILLION DOLLARS and hundreds of thousands of jobs????

      • truliberal

But do you know why China got the job?

California turned down federal money to avoid federal “Buy American” laws and hire a Chinese firm. ABC News also interviewed a CalTrans official who said the Chinese firm could provide the fabricated bridge decks more quickly because U.S. firms don’t have enough welders. The broadcast failed to note, however, that only some jobs, not all, will go to China as a result. And taxpayers saved a bundle.

Please get your facts straight and don’t blame President Obama – put the blame where it belongs.

        • I blame Obama and the liberals, they spleak with forked tounge, they say one thing and do another. who passed NAFTA??????????

          • anyasnote

Who pass TARP??? And Republican’s speak with forked tongue, they vote for it and when Obama’s agrees then they filibuster against it. Diane Sawyer had a nice show but failed to say the WHOLE TRUTH and yes truliberal is right. California refused Fed grants (mandatory to hire local qualified labor and material) and in order to get the job done they hired Chinese and they expertise because American workers did not feel like working under Chinese bosses. They did not wanted under these circumstances then they out of the loop. Romney your, IDOL changes his views every hour on the hour depends who is giving more money and ask for return of the money plus more. If somebody who speaks with forked tongue is your IDOL and his wifey poo. It’s their turn, oh yeah for what ??? Do you question Obama’s birth certificate?? do you question Obama- faith still.
My God People and you call yourself Christians?? You believe in God and all spew lies, distortion, discrimination etc. It’s what your and Mitsy God is?? Guess what Obama will survive just nice on your dime. Will you survive under MItsy the ditzy. No money, no job, no insurance and they R/R will tell you – go and die. You health voucher of 6K worth nothing – maybe an x-ray and lobotomy.
Some people have more money than a common sense. Honesty is not a virtue of any politician and certainly NOT R/R and their pack. Don’t blame Liberals – without them you will not have one National Parks to visit, you will not have one wild life to look at, you will not have SS, Medicare.
They pushed for all preservation, for clean air and water. You don’t like it – move.

          • GTodd

You’re an IDIOT. From which school did you flunk out of English comp?

      • Ed

I have my doubts about this. NYC is a STRONG union town and construction workers would not stand by and let their jobs be stolen. There would be violence in the streets. I do not doubt that some management jobs may be filled by Chinese citizens but not the entire labor force. A great majority of the Billions that you speak of go as wages to american workers. China has a MAJOR modernisation program underway buildin dams and bridges, most of their construction labor force is fully employed at home. Any contract given pout in NYC would require the employer to pay “prevailing wage” not the wage of the home country. This money would go into the US economy. 25 years in the tristate area in construction makes me doubt youer claims.

        • middleclasstaxpayer

I gave you a CONCRETE REFERENCE that you can SEE….you can SEE Diane Sawyer giving her ABC NEWS broadcast LIVE (on tape)….go to the 9/13/2011 broadcast and see it for yourself…what more proof can you ask for???

          • Since when is a news anchor a concrete reference to evaluate policy? Both Ed and truliberal gave you clear and concise responses to your allegation and the best you can come up with is what Diane Sawyer said? Should we assume the liberal media has suddenly become the voice of the GOP? BTW, don’t forget what happened to President Obama’s proposal to punish companies that outsource jobs, and reward those that invest and create jobs in the USA. Just in case you missed it, the GOP did not even bother to debate that proposal in the House…and Diane did not say a word when Boehner and Ryan rejoiced in ignoring a presidential proposal designed to help American workers and improve our economy. I reckon supporting the interests of the Big Boys is more important than doing something beneficial to the middle class and our country as a whole.
Outsourcing has been going on for decades, under both Republican and Democratic administrations. The time to put an end to it is now.

          • middleclasstaxpayer

The reason I cited Diane Sawyer (a Liberal) and ABC news (Supported & run by Liberals) is to demonstrate that EVEN LIBERALS condemned the 8 BILLION DOLLARS awarded to the CHINESE & Chinese workers. There is no excuse for allowing the work, and even the raw materials, to be outsourced to China. If you will remember, for TWO YEARS Obama has both the House AND Senate controlled by his party, yet he still cites fact of NO ACCOMPLISHMENTS by himself as being caused by obstruction of the other side??? Who was obstructing Obama in 2008 & 2009 but his own party! Yes, outsourcing has gone on for decades, but when our own workforce is woefully underemployed (or UNEMPLOYED) it’s time to say NO MORE! Obama has had that opportunity but squandered it. He appears to be attempting to turn us into a 3rd world country, so we’ll be more “equal” with many other nations.

      • Landsende

Most of what you claim is a distortion of the facts which is currently making the rounds in an email just like Bozo’s claim that Obamacare has a tax on the sale of homes which is false. Please check Fact Check or Politifacts for a more detailed explanation if you are really interested in having the correct information.

        • middleclasstaxpayer

The “fact checkers” you cite are supported & run by liberals, so their “facts” are at best questionable.

          • Landsende

Wrong, they are nonpartisan and reveal the truths and untruths of both parties which is why I like them. You can find out if the statements politicians make are true or if they’re fudging the truth which they both like to do. In case you haven’t noticed politicians don’t always tell the truth by leaving out facts that would sway voters one way or the other.

          • middleclasstaxpayer

I am sorry to be a skeptic, but when I tried to verify one of their “facts” recently, I found a lot of “links” to the sources and at first felt reassured. But when I decided to view each “link”, none went anywhere? Hopefully this was just a fluke, but it did strike me as odd. Thanks for your help.

    • Ed

Hmmm, the 1970’s , I think you mean the 1980’s.

      • Nixon (1969-1974) paved the way for outsourcing when he and Kissinger re-established diplomatic and trade relations with China. You are correct in pointing out that outsourcing peaked in the 1980s…

  • Before we push the panic button, let’s not forget that this country was not founded by people who shunned a good fight or were unwilling to overcome tremendous obstacles. If there is one thing we can be proud of it is our determination to succeed and towards that end we have shown time and again that we can overcome adversity and, quite often, use it to find new opportunities, concepts and develop new products and processes to guarantee our standard of living continues to improve. The USA is not broke, our debt is a tiny fraction of our GDP compared to the ratio in most industrialized nations, what we are lacking at the moment is willingness to make the sacrifices needed to pay for what we need and benefit from, and invest in things such as infrastructure, modernization, R&D and education/training. Why can small countries such as the Netherlands build the best levees in the world and we continue to build early 20th century levees, why was Switzerland able to build the Cern facilities and we are still talking about home schooling knowing that many parents are high school dropouts? We need to highlight the fallacy of those who want to take the country back, at a time when our focus should be on the future, on innovation, modernization and using our diversity and ability to attract foreign talent to achieve the level of prosperity our country needs and deserves.

  • How in the hell I get mail from an idiotic bunch of idiots.I don’t mean the readers. You are just morons for believing this.I will unsubscribe.

  • bacalove

What I take issue with is the GOP Congress who will not pass Jobs Bill Pres. Obama sent to them; they continue to Subsidize Big Oil, but will not Subsidize Solar & Wind to produce clean energy and stimulate more jobs.

  • ObozoMustGo

When did your home become part of your health care?

I thought you might find this interesting, — maybe even SICKENING! The National Association of Realtors is all over this and working to get it repealed, — before it takes effect. But, I am very pleased we aren’t the only ones who know about this ploy to steal billions from unsuspecting homeowners. How many realtors do you think will vote Democratic in 2012 ? Did you know that if you sell your house after 2012 you will pay a
3.8% sales tax on it? That’s $3,800 on a $100,000 home, etc . When did this happen? It’s in the health care bill, — and it goes into effect in 2013. Why 2013? Could it be so that it doesn’t come to light until after the 2012 elections? So, this is ‘change you can believe in’? Under the new health care bill all real estate transactions will be subject to a 3.8% sales tax . If you sell a $400,000 home, there will be a $15,200 tax . This bill is set to screw the retiring generation, — who often downsize their homes. Does this make your November, 2012 vote more important? Oh, you weren’t aware that this was in the Obama Care bill? Guess what; you aren’t alone! There are more than a few members of Congress that weren’t aware of it either.

    Have a nice day!

“I don’t think your boss should get to control the health care you get. I don’t think insurance companies should control the care that you get. I don’t think politicians should control the care that you get. I think there’s one person to make these decisions on health care and that is you.” – Guess who said it

    • jcbsdriver

This post is on every page. I asked questions about this and I am not receiving a response. I believe it is misleading and untruthful

      • ObozoMustGo

        jcb… I’ll copy my response to 2 others herein…

I understand what you are saying. As with all taxes, there are of course rules about how they are applied. The post was not about the rules, but the point that THERE IS A NEW TAX IN OBOZOCARE. Sorry, but it is a fact that Obozocare includes a NEW 3.8% SALES TAX on the sale of homes. While it is true that it is not on every dollar, it is a NEW TAX that will disproportionately affect older Americans who have little or no mortgage and have owned their home for a long time which results in large capital gains when they are downsizing. Here is a an example of the new tax:

The 3.8% surtax is on net capital gain on MAGI over 250k for married filing joint. For example, if you have w2 household income of 150k and sell your house for 400k and the house cost you 250k. The net capital gain on the house is 150k then add income of 150k = 300k total, so a total of 50k will have to pay the surtax of $1,900.

Regardless of how you want to slice it, Obozocare HAS A NEW TAX that will be incurred on the sale of your home. THAT IS A FACT!!!

        Have a nice day!

“A wise and frugal Government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government, and this is necessary to close the circle of our felicities.” – Thomas Jefferson

    • OMG, your post, which is a cut a paste from similar Goebellian posts being put forth by Tea Party hacks, is misleading and factually incorrect, unless you are a millionaire. One of the sources of funding for the Affordable Care Act involves increasing the MEDICARE tax rate by .9% and imposing an added tax of 3.8% on UNEARNED INCOME FOR HIGH INCOME TAXPAYERS to raise $210B needed to fund Obamacare. The new tax does not affect middle class Americans when they sell their houses. If in doubt, check ACA funding on line.

    • Landsende

      Hi Bozo,
Please get your facts straight. There has always been a tax on the sale of a home if the sale is over $250,000 for single homeowners and $500,000 for married homeowners. The tax is only on the amount over those figures. It has nothing to do with Obamacare. The National Association of Realtors has put out a press release stating that these claims are false. Unfortunately to many like you are perpetuating these false claims without checking the facts. Please go to Fact Check or Politifacts for a more detailed explanation.

      Have a nice day!
