July 22nd, 2011 3:34 pm Sam Knowles

WASHINGTON (AP) — Huge increases in deportations of people after they were arrested for breaking traffic or immigration laws or driving drunk helped the Obama administration set a record last year for the number of criminal immigrants forced to leave the country, documents show.

The U.S. deported nearly 393,000 people in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, half of whom were considered criminals. When Bush started this , a friend of mine was arrested and held by ICE in Greenfield Mass awaiting to be deported, he ran out of money to get home to get his visa renewed. While visiting him their, I saw some of the most heartbreaking situations you would ever encounter. A family who had lived in this country for many years, ( their children were babies when they came here) they owned a business, paid taxes and mortgages, and now their husbands were being deported and the wives and children would stay. They lost their business and homes. They were not criminals , they were hard workers and tax payers, but because they did not have the required papers , were sent back. Now their families are depending on welfare and food stamps. How did any of this help us? We are now paying for them to live on the system instead of paying taxes and mortgages. Their were many of these cases and very few criminals. It was the saddest moments I have ever endured and I couldn’t believe that we were so heartless that we allowed this to happen to good families who were not criminals and paid into our country. Families were torn apart, children would no longer have fathers or grandfathers. To know that we have done this and left these families in such devastation, makes you wonder who the monsters really are.
