In 2004, the animated sitcom “The Simpsons” showed Homer Simpson at a voting booth, going through the ID gauntlet, then casting his vote for Bush (while admitting that he knew nothing about either candidate). Basically, since he was obviously a white man, who would be more likely to vote for a Republican, they went easy on him in the ID screening. The rest of the details are hazy in my memory, except that it was quite funny. Anyone who wants to could probably look it up on YouTube.
Back in the original Jim Crow days, in states that had “literacy” tests, the test given to white voters, even the most obviously illiterate ones, had simple oral questions like “what color is the daytime sky” or “who was our first President,” while the test given to black voters, even doctors, lawyers and teachers, often had very difficult questions, and questions which could be parsed to have completely different meanings, so no matter what the answer, the black voter could be disqualified.
And before GOP apologists ring in, in those days the racists were members of the Democratic party, there being almost no Republicans in the South (which meant that the minority of white people who were NOT racist ALSO had to register as Democrats), and the northern racists were members of both parties. The Civil Rights Act caused most of the racist voters and politicians to switch parties and a few to either accede passively, or join in actively, in promoting civil rights for all. This, Nixon’s “Southern strategy,” did not happen overnight, but today many voters and politicians are Republicans BECAUSE that party did not make them feel uncomfortable with their racist views, while the Democrats did. The “smaller government” and “lower taxes” and religious doctrines are window dressing to make their racially motivated policies sound perfectly fair and non-discriminating.
LET US THEREFORE REFORM THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. STAY IN IT FOR ITS VALUE SYSTEMS AND ITS POLICY OF SMALLER GOVERNMENT AND LOWER TAXES.
the only way this nation is going to thrive is by turning every state purple.. We don’t need a one-party g’ment it’s not in our interests to anger up to half the state by choosing only one doctrine. Equality in g’ment is just as important as equality toward minorities. We all need to respect the next guy and cooperation and compromise is the backbone toward progress.
We saw a Republican have to cast an absentee ballet, his ID didnt match his registered address. Sweet justice!
Did you check to see if he was dead? I heard the dead were closely akin to conservatives as their a bit brainless as well.
I didn’t get to look into his eyes, lol! May have been a zombie!
