I come not to rebuke Hillary Clinton, who remains by far the most capable presidential candidate. I come bearing advice for her campaign.

Hillary, this is something you sorely need.

1. Understand that New Hampshire didn’t owe you anything. “New Hampshire had been good for the Clintons,” we kept hearing. Its primary saved Bill’s hide in the 1992 presidential race. In 2008, it gave you a needed boost when the sisterhood, enraged at perceived sexist attacks, rushed to your defense.

But what did any of this have to do with 2016?

2. Women don’t owe you anything, either. Which side was paying Gloria Steinem to disparage younger women who chose to vote for Bernie Sanders? She said they were chasing boys; can you imagine? And what prompted Madeleine Albright to say that women should vote to help other women as opposed to helping their country?

This was an assault on female intelligence. It also mildly embarrassed women who support Clinton, not out of a desire to elect a female president but because she’s the most qualified candidate. And oh, please call off the celebrity brigade. Not everyone regards Lena Dunham as a font of wisdom.

3. Bill’s presidency was a long time ago. Bill left America in wonderful fiscal shape, and every class prospered. For we who remember the Bill Clinton years, it was a golden age.

Problem is, how many of us remember? Today’s 20-year-olds were 4 when Bill left office. Furthermore, much has happened since then, which brings us to the next item.

4. The Great Recession changed everything. In 2008, the bottom dropped out of the economy. The years that followed have proven a hard slog for young people trying to gain an economic foothold. Blue-collar workers, meanwhile, continued to lose what they had. They are all angry at Washington’s tireless service to the moneyed masters, and with reason.

Now, contrary to his spiel, Bernie Sanders is the candidate of Wall Street. That’s because if nominated, he would almost certainly lose to any Republican running against him. Note how right-wing media isn’t laying a finger on Sanders. On the contrary, by looping the pumped-up charges that Hillary can’t be trusted, the right is feeding the Sanders campaign.

You know this, Hillary. What you must do is brush it aside and speak directly to the hurting electorate. That means getting out of yourself. Let others talk about what you represent, your impressive resume or your massive capacity for hard work.

It’s nice to tell the younger liberals flocking to Sanders that you’ll be listening to them. Better, though, to say that you’re going to take on the powers crushing their economic prospects.

5. Hillary, you are the candidate, not “the Clintons.” In other words, drop the dynasty nonsense. (How’s that going for Jeb Bush?)

Chelsea should not be speaking for you. Bill is more complicated in that he’s a former president. But rein him in.

Bill should not have berated alleged Sanders followers for writing nasty things about a female liberal pundit supporting you. It came off as both paternalistic and dated. Social media has opened a cesspool of anonymous creeps working out of unclear motives. Anyone who can’t ignore that doesn’t belong in the arena.

Hillary, the voter demographics in the coming primaries and caucuses are more favorable to a candidate like you. But you still must replace some of your caution with from-the-heart fire. Open the doors and windows of the lamentably labeled “Clintonworld” and send the hangers-on packing. The more you are yourself, the better you will do.

Froma should have included the fact that ethnic minorities are not monolithic groups beholden to the Clintons either. The idea that African-American and most Latinos will vote for Hillary because of her marital surname is as ridiculous as expecting the folks in Iowa and NH to vote for Hillary because she is a woman, or because what Bill did when he was President. Bill Clinton was one of our best Presidents, as far as I am concerned, but when it comes to African-Americans it is going to take more than just platitudes and jokes to convince them to vote for Hillary or anyone else. They remember who signed the welfare reform bill, and who signed legislation that led to the incarceration of tens of thousands of ethnic minorities for minor offenses.
Nobody should be taken for granted. Ethnic minorities, like everyone else, will vote for whomever they believe best represents their values and aspirations. What Hillary must do is change her demeanor, listen and consider what most Americans want and expect from our leaders, and propose policy changes designed to solve socio-economic problems. For better or worse, neither Hillary nor Bernie have the ability to fool people the way Donald is doing. Democrats expect unambiguous proposals, we want to discuss issues rather than beauty and magic wands, and most of us plan to vote for whomever has the qualifications, experience, and vision to lead the country. Thus far, Bernie has the upper hand. It is up to Hillary to reflect and learn from what she has been doing, and make changes to her strategy and persona before it is too late.

Ah, another Clinton apologist!! The part that really pisses me off is saying Sanders is the party of Wall Street because he can’t win! That’s pretty infuriating!! So in order to fight Wall Street we gotta have a candidate that’s been bought and picked by Wall Street? Stunning arrogance and always gives you a clue as to what class you belong to. I guarantee you the author didn’t miss a meal or get their power shut off or lose their house in the great recession!! Bernie can win. He may win the primary but it certainly won’t be because there was a better candidate.

SAnders and Dov Hikind…Sanders and Felder…Sanders and Goldman Sachs…who did you think the Saint Bernard uses for his investments? Netanyahu?

Face facts…the ONLY reason Sanders magically appeared in the spotlight is because his back room agenda is to get rid of the Iran Treaty…wink wink nod nod and kiss Netanyahu’s butt.

      • RED says:

Wow! I usually reserve my scorn for ignorant Cons but Eleanor, really?? Is that your attack line today? Investments?? Well, I guess I’ve been bought off by Wall Street too! Who knew? Should I check my mail for a $600,000 check? I’d recommend going back to the “he’s a man” attack, at least that one tells people you just hate all men but this new ones signals you’be lost touch with reality. Where do you get this crazy stuff? Sanders has said over and over he supports the Iran Deal, voted for it. Oh wait I forgot, it’s your bigoted belief in a Jewish conspiracy, that’s right. I forgot that mixed in with all you man hating is a bit of anti-semitism as well. So, which wins out if it’s a Jewish woman?

  3. Bosda says:

Or…OR…we could dismiss this tired old baggage, with the foul stench of political dynasties clinging to her…and elect somebody who has an actual interest in the Poor & the Middle Class–Bernie Sanders.

  4. Eleanore Whitaker says:

Bwahahahaha! “Hillary should” ….”Hillary has to…” Sure..the BS artists of the male control freak league want Hillary to act more like a “MAN.” That way when she does, their double standards on steroids goes into overdrive and then they can say she is a “bitch” or “too feminist.”

Did you ever in your entire female life see a bunch of spiteful males in the history of the world?

I don’t apologize for anything has said, done, will do or will say. Hillary is the ONLY woman who CAN run for president from the ONLY gender deliberately kept on the back burner to satisfy male egos in this country.

When you boys get another excuse for why you won’t vote for Hillary…You can be sure that woman will be more gender biased for their own gender..What? You expected women to suck up to the male gender and ignore the gender of their birth? How stupid do you men plan to get?

So..let’s see…Hillary should act like a man, talk like a man and then how dare she do that? Get another bunch of pathetic excuses…52% of the population are underpaid women paid by MEN who run it all…government and business…Time’s up boys..time for your McMommies and McWifies to stop molly coddling you.

Women are seeing the blatant sabotage to GET RID of the ONLY woman brave enough to take on the army of male bulls. Cowards under the skin they are because they so fear a female president..and before any of you even bother..The reason Elizabeth Warren won’t is because she has seen how men slice and dice any woman who dares to be No. 1 and Commander-in-Chief…get over it fogies. This isn’t 1950 when women only had Donna Reed to live up to and Father Knows Best men made all the rules.

I think it’s funny that all the Corn Pone Kings and their fraternal order of Mutton Chops so fear a woman like Hillary…is that because you men know your games of your lifetimes are over?

  5. Eleanore Whitaker says:

It’s awfully curious how the BBC reports that Hillary is leading Sanders and Trump by at least 6 points and the ALL MALE owned media who use their buxom blondes as anchors to pretty up their uggo male journalists keep deliberately distorting the facts. Try again boys…your pathetic attempts at world supremacy get you nothing with women.

  6. Otto Greif says:

Nothing in her record indicates she’s “capable”.
