Trump Accepts Nomination, Vows To Put ‘America First’

Trump on immigration

CLEVELAND (Reuters) – Donald Trump accused Democratic rival Hillary Clinton of a legacy of “death, destruction, terrorism and weakness” as U.S. secretary of state and vowed to be tough on crime and illegal immigrants in a speech on Thursday accepting the Republican presidential nomination.

Trump’s 75-minute speech was designed to set the tone for the general election campaign against Clinton, an answer to Republicans who say the best way he can unify the divided party is to detail why the Democrat should not be elected on Nov. 8.

As the crowd chanted: “Lock her up” for her handling of U.S. foreign policy, Trump waved them off and said: “Let’s defeat her in November.” Thousands of supporters who were gathered in the convention hall roared their approval.

When it was over, Trump was joined on stage by family members as balloons cascaded from above and confetti blew around the arena.

The acceptance speech by Trump, 70, closed out a four-day convention that underscored his struggle to heal fissures in the Republican Party over his anti-illegal-immigrant rhetoric and concerns about his temperament. The event was boycotted by many big-name establishment Republicans, such as 2012 nominee Mitt Romney and members of the Bush family that gave the party its last two presidents.

Trump presented a bleak view of America under siege from illegal immigrants, threatened by Islamic State militants, hindered by crumbling infrastructure and weakened by unfair trade deals and race-related violence.

Accusing illegal immigrants of taking jobs from American citizens and committing crimes, Trump vowed to build a “great border wall” against the border-crossers.

“We will stop it,” Trump said.

Trump took positions in conflict with traditional Republican policies. He said he would avoid multinational trade deals but instead pursue agreements with individual countries. He would renegotiate the NAFTA trade accord linking the United States, Canada and Mexico. He would penalize companies that outsource jobs and then export their foreign-made products back into the United States.

“We will never sign bad trade deals,” Trump thundered. “America first!”

The New York businessman, who has never held elected office, filled his speech with some of the bravado he used to win the Republican nomination over 16 rivals, punctuating his rhetorical points by waving an index finger.

“I have joined the political arena so that the powerful can no longer beat up on people that cannot defend themselves,” Trump said. “Nobody knows the system better than me, which is why I alone can fix it.”

In his speech, Trump portrayed himself as a fresh alternative to traditional politicians, willing to consider new approaches to vexing problems and help working-class people who may feel abandoned.

Laying out his case against Clinton, he denounced nation-building policies that were actually put in place to some extent by George W. Bush, without mentioning by name the Republican president who launched wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Trump said policies pursued by Clinton in Iraq, Libya, Egypt and Syria had made a bad situation worse. He blamed her for the rise of Islamic State militants and blasted her willingness to accept thousands of Syrian refugees.

“After 15 years of wars in the Middle East, after trillions of dollars spent and thousands of lives lost, the situation is worse than it has ever been before. This is the legacy of Hillary Clinton: death, destruction, terrorism and weakness,” Trump said.

Clinton senior adviser John Podesta dismissed the speech as painting “a dark picture of an America in decline” and called it a reminder that Trump “is temperamentally unfit and totally unqualified to be president of the United States.”

John Weaver, a senior adviser to Ohio Republican Governor John Kasich, a former presidential rival to Trump, said in a tweet that Trump had delivered the “saddest, darkest, most depressing acceptance speech in modern history.”

‘THINGS HAVE TO CHANGE’

Trump needed a strong performance on Thursday night to improve his chances of getting a boost in opinion polls as Democrats prepare for their own, more scripted convention next week in Philadelphia.

In a contest that pits two politicians viewed as unfavorable by large segments of the American people, Trump also accused Clinton, 68, of being the puppet of big business, elite media and major donors who want to preserve the current political system.

“That is why Hillary Clinton’s message is that things will never change. My message is that things have to change – and they have to change right now,” Trump said.

Trump said he would speedily address the violence that has dominated headlines, such as the shooting deaths of five Dallas police officers earlier this month. He vowed to defeat “the barbarians of ISIS,” the acronym for Islamic State.

“I have a message for all of you: The crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon come to an end. Beginning on Jan. 20, 2017, safety will be restored,” Trump said. The next president takes office on Jan. 20.

CONVENTION DISCORD

The prevailing narrative at the Cleveland convention has not been about Trump’s positions, but dominated instead by the failure of he party’s various factions to unite behind Trump.

A series of distractions at the convention largely thwarted a bid by the Trump campaign to show him as a caring father and magnanimous business leader who would bring greater prosperity and safety to the United States.

But in the end, many of these points were made when Ivanka Trump, Trump’s daughter, introduced her father.

“I have seen him fight for his family. I have seen him fight for his employees. I have seen him fight for his company and now I am seeing him fight for our country,” she said.

Trump’s text of his speech, released by his campaign, included extensive footnotes to show where the material originated.

That was perhaps in reaction to the speech given on Monday night by Trump’s wife Melania, who was accused of plagiarism when she repeated lines from a 2008 speech by Michelle Obama, Obama’s wife.

A staff writer for the Trump Organization later took responsibility for the misstep.

That was a disaster of a speech. There really isn’t a Republican Party at this point. Even McConnell and Graham hard as they try keep a public grasp on what the GOP once was now that Donald Trump has decimated the Party. Hillary Clinton is going to landslide over him and take the Senate with her. Trump is a dangerous demagogue of absolutely no qualifications to lead the greatest nation on earth. He would be the end of America’s world leadership.

Those who are used to buy empty promises, there you get your man. The man is not ready to show how he made his fortune by providing his Tax Returns, but with a straight face he continues to lie to people in order to get elected by selling them snake-oil. Sorry Don, good thinkers are not ready to buy what you are selling and don’t trust you.

You were in a coma in Sept. 2008 when every US bank nearly went down taking the European banks with them? You were asleep when Bush ignored ALL of the warnings of an al Qaeda attack that happened on HIS watch?

First of all, southern and midwestern states are ALL Republican states that get back nearly double what they pay in federal taxes. You want to tell us in the hell they are failing one by one?

These Mutton Chops and Corn Pones want to take their country back to the days when men and women like you had free slave labor to work your Grandpappy Mutton Chops plantations…Now the only plantation work you sharecroppers can find in the south and midwest are Walmartian jobs which WE have to supplement by paying for your welfare. Loser.

South Jersey has NO rednecks. Just phonies like you pretending to swagger and drawl. I have a nephew who was relocated to BIG RICH TEXAS THAT WHOLE OTHER COUNTRY by his company. He lasted 12 years before he couldn’t stand the phony ass males all acting like it was Dodge City or Bust.

I have relatives in NC, FL, GA and MD. From the way their Republican politicians force them to live on salaries that are 35% below what we are paid in the Northeast, no affordable healthcare and the ONLY jobs are in polluter industries that kill them off faster than you can pass a bowel movement.

You want to explain just why any southern or midwestern state like IA, KS, OK, TX, NC or WV needs more of MY tax dollars when these states are already getting more than double what they pay in? Math and education in Corn Pone and Mutton Chops states is not exactly your strong suit is it?

You have NO colleges or universities in these Republican states that remotely compare to NJ’s Princeton or Rutgers. Much like MA MIT or Yale and Harvard.

Your superiority act is as phony as that drawl and swagger.

I am a northern boy but went to school in the South and was surprised to see how advanced these Red Necks were. We should all try and travel in the US and learn from each other , fun it is .

Some of that missing $ 10 trillion, no middleman it would save A trillion in admin costs alone. Show your voucher at your Dr or Med facility and it be simple. I work in health care and there is much overlaid costs for moronic billing and claims, you can eliminate HR benefit depts and Lawyers. Interesting, I have solar panels on my roof, and they didn’t cost me a dime. Vivint Solar basically is “using” my roof, and I reap the benefits of getting a lower electrical bill. And SolarCity, another solar company in California (and around the US) is doing extremely well. Not sure what you mean by “pork barreling,” since we only get a one-time rebate for putting up solar panels, and it isn’t much. Actually, I didn’t get the rebate because I don’t actually own my panels. Either way, my electrical bill is considerably lower and my carbon footprint is also considerably lower. So, you haven’t actually “been there and seen” have you? By the way, I live in Southern California…..the solar panel capital of California! We have MANY homes in our area with solar panels, and I live in a basically middle-class neighborhood in a middle-class city.

You are right , some states have reimbursements to the solar companies , and I use Vivint also. Some States do not offer tX incentives or such things and you have to pay the cost , which is ok if you are into carbon footprint issues. Earlier companies , manufacturing panels , had a hard time selling without rebates. There are not too many carbon footprint enthusiasts around here.

“Trump isn’t going to put America first.” – OK, amid your blither, you’ve accidentally fallen ass-backward into coherency. You and I will find agreement on this point. Not sure why you thought we wouldn’t.

“How stupid do you morons think we are?” – Well, putting aside the irony of your question for a moment, I’ll answer: A little, at least. For the past 50 years, Progs have orgasmically voted for $20 trillion in debt. So, yeah. A little stupid.

“Like we would EVER allow a pig like her to be First Lady.” – Wow, that’s some serious hatred. Have you discussed this with your therapist?

Look to Reagan and the Bushes for a lot of that debt. Bill Clinton found the sweet spot in tax levels where the country was paying for what it was spending. Once the tax increases kicked in, look at that period on the chart between 1997 and 2001. That should have continued and can always be brought back.

Clinton had Gingrich to save him from himself. Reagan had the duplicitous O’Neil, and the current disaster in the White House chose to score points rather than listen to the deficit hawks in either party.

There were 4 factors, in my mind, that led to balanced budgets and stopping the growth of the debt in the late 90’s and very early 2000’s, but that large reconciliation act tax increase was the biggest one in my opinion.

The second biggest factor was Bush Sr. and Clinton on military spending. Bush Sr., obviously noticing that the Cold War had ended, started implementing cuts in military spending as a % of GDP. When Clinton came into office, he kept on the glide path that Bush Sr. had put in place. The result was that defense spending actually fell in nominal terms, from $299.3 billion in 1990 to $294.5 billion in 2000. As a % of GDP, it fell from 5.2 to 3.0, accounting for 2/3 of the drop.

Of course with a lower debt to GDP, interest payments on the debt were lower. Falling interest rates helped too. That was number three.

Gingrich did get a restraint in the growth of domestic spending, but it wasn’t very much. Domestic spending fell very slightly from 13.0% of GDP to 12.9% of GDP. That was the fourth, and least, factor.

As to Obama—not letting the Bush tax cuts expire, when he had the chance, was a big, big, mistake and to some extent, he has to wear that.

Actually, it is also illegal and prejudicial since it is rich white Republicans who own the media and most of the biggest corporations. That means they control who is poor and who isn’t.

When, not if, Hillary wins in November, these corporate welfare slugs will find a much more militant middle class demanding they share those profits their employees earn for them.

If they don’t, a lot of them will end up parceled out in the Biggest US Garage Sale ever.

But, even better…How is it you fukkolas don’t ever mention Congressman Mark Foley’s EMAIL Scandals…can’t even compare to any email of Hillarys…after all, his scandal led to Foley’s resignation from Congress on September 29 when one Congressional page reported he saw “sexually explicit e-mails sent to 2 teenage Congressional pages.

Sure does sound like you need to remove your head from that double wide trailer trash ass.

There are a few things that need to be said in an acceptance speech. You must praise the American worker and the American spirit. You must praise the powerful American military. You must point to a brighter future, fuelled by hardworking Americans. You might also mention your belief that God has blessed America and will help the nominee to achieve that brighter future. People watching and listening must feel better after the speech than they did before it. Oh, the people in the hall, some of them, felt better, but that was likely a result of too much booze and too much collective hatred. What people watching at home heard was the horrible mess America finds itself in. It appears that Trump’s speech did not get high marks for political orthodoxy. Fear and loathing have a short shelf life, especially when the Democrats next week are going to tell everyone how President Obama, with little help from a Republican, obstructionist Congress, brought America back from the brink of economic disaster, how Republicans have tried, again and again, to strip their health care from them, and how Republicans have attempted to destroy America’s credit rating by shutting down the federal government. There is an admirable Obama record to point to and a despicable Republican record to reveal. The other shoe, one that is carefully crafted to elicit the good feelings that most people want, will drop next week in Philadelphia.

Sadly, I think Hillary Clinton has more to fear from that type than does the Trumpster. While there are probably a lot of Democrats who would like to see Trump eaten by the thing that straightens his comb-over (preferably only a few days before the election so the Tea Party won’t have time to make a substitution–Of course, Trump’s followers would still vote for his corpse. . . . At
least his corpse would do less damage to America than the live version.), there are probably very few who would perpetrate what you suggest against Trump. On the other hand, there is undoubtedly no lack of Tea Party gun-toters who would like nothing more than the chance to remove the Democratic nominee.

Just tell some people that their taxes will go down, and they’ll vote for anyone. Sure, paying taxes is sometimes painful, but the people who hate taxes don’t realize that the taxes they pay go to improve their lives in many ways. It’s interesting that people in Scandinavian countries get this, and they are the happiest people in the world. I’m not saying socialism is the answer, but there are aspects of it that need to be copied in America, such as education and health care. Unfortunately, Republicans don’t like educated people, and, for some reason, they don’t want everyone to be healthy. . . . And I think that Donald Trump may be the first presidential candidate to neglect to say that America is the greatest country in the world. How can it be if he’s going to make America great AGAIN? (We do know that Donald Trump is the best businessman the world has ever known–he told us!)

but when its a clown like DONNY DUMP that is (Just tell some people that their taxes will go down) that’s something one shouldn’t take with a grain of salt but a sack of salt . as to your point of education the GOP gang of idiots don’t want educated people in the country for its those one that can see their wall of B/S . the strangest thing of all is the question what the hell is wrong with the people of this country ? if thy was to just do simple things like make a list of what good things the DEMS want to do for the people and the country . and the same list of what the GOP want . just the answer to those questions should show the people who is best for them . like DONNY DUMP wants (and pretty much got with his brain dead followers ) is for people to be so stupid . its a joke how he talks to people pile’s up his B/S and he wants all to believe him .as for the face the DUMPSTER never say’s the country is great heck not even good . he talks like the country is no better off then Haiti . as for the clown being a great businessman tell that to the people that hurt from his filing bankrupts 5 times ? he bury places that gamble and make’s so much money and what happen when he ran them ? thy died . and you stated and its him saying this (We do know that Donald Trump is the best businessman the world has ever known–he told us!) its not he told us its more like (he says BELIEVE ME ) I post my fair share not to change people as much I just want to enlighten them . and I believe DONNY DUMP has had a plane from the start of him running for the house and its like a WAIT FOR IT WAIT FOR IT then he drops it on every one there’s a bomb that will be dropped and it will go as he planed it from the start . one being if he takes the house (god help the country and the world then ) he pretty much already said this he will use the USA to file the biggest bankrupt in history . and if he dosent win you can see his next tax filings as charging every hour he put into running and will clam im thinking from $100,000 to $500.000 per. hour . and then of course there’s his new TV show called DONNY DUMP THE BIGGEST LOSER IN THE WORLD . nothing for nothing his life is all just a con fraud and a con game and the big ball he will drop (mark my words ) there is a meth to his madness

A very famous person once said that taxes are the cost of civilization. It very much is. If we want to be civilized we need to pay taxes. Some of us would rather be civilized that not.

Agreed….there’s no reason why taxes for EVERYONE can’t be raised a little to pay for some of the things we need in this country. Cutting taxes for the wealthy isn’t going to get anything done! Most of them don’t pay taxes in the first place, especially the big corporations! Their profits are absurd, but they pay little or nothing to be in business!!!

But, what some taxpayers don’t realize is that if Trump lowers taxes for the super rich….it’ll be the poor and middle class that will have to make up the difference. These are the people that generally don’t realize what their taxes are used for (except to pay for ridiculous salaries for Congressmen/women who do NOTHING). If they want to improve our infrastructure, our health care, etc., there has to be money paid in via taxes to cover this….it doesn’t just appear out of nowhere! Norquist has kept the Republicans away from voting for tax increases, which are needed, and that has caused many of the problems that we currently have. You need money to get things done, and when you use austerity as your excuse for not raising taxes, it doesn’t work (look at Brownback and Kansas)!

It makes you wonder just how dumb some of these politicians are–and if they’re not dumb then they’re self-serving and evil. It doesn’t take too much mathematical ability to figure out that spending more than you take in leaves a deficit. And if you reduce spending to match decreased revenues, then something that used to be there (e.g., education, infrastructure, law enforcement) will be missing. I guess as long as the wealthy get their “fair share,” then everything’s OK. There’s lots of room at the Interstate off ramp.

And, all we have heard from the conservatives is how much the deficit has grown….apparently, they don’t know the REAL reason why it has grown and they just want to blame President Obama when the REAL blame goes to our illustrious GOP congressmen/women! I agree with you about the wealthy…..if Trump and his cronies lower taxes on corporations and the wealthy….it’ll be the poor and middle class who have to make up the difference…..or, we go without any changes to our educational programs, infrastructure, law enforcement, etc.

I couldn’t agree with you more. Trump’s focus on negativism, gloom and doom, and a RNC platform that promises to ban abortions, ban gay marriage, build walls to keep undesirables out (Czechs and Slovenians are OK), deny subsidized healthcare coverage to 20 million Americans, destroy public education, dismantle the EPA, and other such proposals, are likely to be the work of the Lucifer cited during the Republican convention.
This was not a gracious, pragmatic, speech designed to inspire the American people. It was old fashion fear mongering that, sadly, resonates among small, but very determined segment of our population.

Only the Memo & their leftist followers would put a negative spin on putting Americans first & telling it’s Citizens the truth about some sad facts hurting our Country. Why would anyone disagree with helping ALL (Americans), African-American, Hispanic, women, & even LGBT, as TRUMP has done, as long as they are AMERICANS? Trump will help all Americans, but will enforce our Laws. Any American should be enthusiastic, but if you are an Illegal, or criminal, or terrorist, then you should be worried.

p.s. Hillary, (almost 69), & Bernie, (74), didn’t have their ages mentioned in this article, just Trumps? So?

His speech was full of “me, me, me, and more me!” He didn’t say anything of any substance as to HOW he plans on doing all the things he has said he’s going to do….the stupid part is that his followers don’t seem to understand that he won’t be able to make miracles!
